The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru in Collaboration with Talaash Association, Bengaluru, organized a National Webinar titled “Unheard Souls” on 12th June 2021 at 10.30am via Google meet platform.
The Resource Person for the webinar was Mrs. Seema Diwan, Founder President of Talaash Association, Bengaluru. She expressed that their association aims to work towards a society that is free of exploitation, injustice and poverty. She shared her experience of working with and for the victims of Human Trafficking where mainly women and children are the survivors. Human trafficking is one of the organized crime, wherein they target economically backward people and exploit them she said. The importance of rehabilitation for the psychological, physical and social wellbeing of victims of human trafficking was stressed during the session. A few cases handled by the association in relation to the human trafficking were discussed to explain the modus operandi used by the perpetrators. It was an interactive session where queries put forward by the participants were discussed stressing upon the role of students and public in identifying the victims and providing collective information to the respective authorities in case they come across any such incidents.
Dr. Juliet C.J. Principal, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya had presided over the webinar and briefed about the role of Talaash association which works closely with the government and national-international development agencies and in partnership with corporate bodies to fight against exploitation, social injustice and harassment of children and women. This association addresses the needs of every child & woman and is the voice for changing survivors’ lives and contributes to the promotion & protection of women and children’s rights through advocacy, prevention, protection, prosecution, partnership and integration rights-based approach. She stated that the students of Criminology also deal with the investigation and preventive aspects of human trafficking as a crime. Hence, this webinar would help them to provide services to the victims of human trafficking.
Dr. Saritha D’Souza, Convener of the webinar, Head of the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science of the college expressed that this webinar has provided insight for the participants on their role in aiding NGOs that are working for the trafficked victims from a state of victimization to integrating them as productive members of the society.
Faculties and students of various universities, Autonomous colleges across the country, and of the organizing college, Alumni of the department and people from the field and allied areas were present during the session.
