The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, in collaboration with Trinity Forensic Investigation, organised an inter-collegiate Treasure Hunt and Debate competition on the topic - ‘Does Capital Punishment Deter Rape in India’ on the 16 the of January 2020.

The programme was conducted in honour of the late Dr. B. Ashoka, on his birth anniversary. Students and faculty from Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) and the department of Forensic Science and Criminology at Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences attended and participated in the event.

The programme began post lunch at 2pm, Dr. Saritha D’Souza, H.O.D of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, gave the opening address. She introduced the programme and gave an insight into the purpose of this event.

Dr. Juliet C J Principal of the School of Social Work gave the Presidential Address in which she addressed the need for raising awareness on the issue. This was followed by a video presentation by the second year CFS students. Following the video presentation both the Debate and Treasure Hunt Competitions began simultaneously. The Treasure Hunt was organised in the campus premises, with a total of 32 participants divided into 8 teams of 4 each.

The Debate Competition was organised into 2 rounds and had a total of 20 participants, out of whom 8 were selected for the second round. The participants passionately argued both in favour of and against the topic of capital punishment and rape. Mrs. Asha Lobo and Dr. Sebastian K.V. were the judges for the event, while Mrs. Swathi Shetty, Assistant Professor of Forensic Science at Srinivas monitored the debate as the moderator.  

Ms. Neha Namdeo, second year student of the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science School of Social Work and Ms. Joycel Rodrigues, second year student of the under graduate department of Criminology and Forensic science Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences were the Emcees of the day.
