The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science in collaboration with Cyber Sapiens, Mangaluru had organized a two-days workshop on ‘Unravelling the Mysteries of Cyber Forensics: Hands-on Training in Investigation of Digital Crimes’ for the first year MSc Criminology and Forensic Science students held on 9th &10th March 2023 in Cyber Forensic Laboratory of the college. Mr. Chirag Suvarna, Cyber Security Analyst, Cyber Sapiens, Mangaluru was the Resource Person. The workshop began with a prayer invoking God's blessings followed by a formal welcome by Ms. Shresta Mendon. Ms. Jyothsna introduced the speaker. Mr Aaron Sajith Kingsley compered the event. Dr. Saritha D’Souza, Head, P G Dept. of Criminology and Forensic Science of the college addressed the students about the purpose of organizing the workshop. The objectives of the workshop are to understand the technicalities of Cyber Forensics, Learn to handle the digital evidence existing in the digital media, to be aware of various types of malwares and its implications and to know the role of Cyber Security analyst. Mr. Roshan D’ Souza and Mr. Niketh PS, Assistant Professors of the department were also present during the inaugural session.
On the first day of the workshop Mr. Chirag Suvarna discussed the concept of Cyber Forensics through case analysis and misuse of technology to commit crimes. He spoke about the procedure followed during cybercrime investigation. Further, he focused on the steps involved in image analysis, hash calculation, copying and imaging, extracting information from the hard disk if it is found in the crime scene. He also explained about cryptography and how an expert witness should write the report on the evidence found on the crime scene.
On the second day he spoke about the types of e-mail, how to identify the location of source and destination of e-mail, different social networking sites, search engines used and the threats involved. The sessions were conducted both in theory and practical exposure to various software used for the detection of cybercrimes. Practical sessions were conducted by giving individual attention to each student on hash calculations, image analysis, copying and imaging, password recovery, email header analysis, analysing the image, recovery of deleted files, changing the boot order and file signature verification. Altogether, 18 students were trained to handle the simulated cases, investigate and to collect basic information by using relevant software. Queries were cleared in between the sessions and feedback of the workshop was taken from the students. Students expressed satisfaction over the sessions conducted along with the practical.
