Sep 19 : Students of MSW had a session with Ms.Karishma, M.A Sociology graduate from TISS University. Ms.Karishnma has done her internship on ‘Disaster Management’ conducting a study on the issue of ‘costal erosion in Ullal’ for the period of one and half month. She shared about her experiences of interaction with community people, local authorities and expressed her gratitude to School of social work Roshni Nilaya and Mr.Kishore Attavar, Director, Center for Extension Services, Roshni Nilaya for the guidance through out her study.
Talking about her findings of the study she explained that, costal erosion in Ullal is a hazard as only land and property has been lost so far and not yet a disaster, which looses lives. However steps needed to be taken to prevent it from becoming a disaster. As per her observation, people of Ullal community come under the low socio-economic profile. The people of the community are really concerned about the issue, but it is getting politicised and mired in corruption and proper impact study is not being made. They really want some assistance to deal with it.
Based on her study she made some recommendations saying, that there is a need for unity among people keeping aside socio-religious differences, which will help in meeting the issue strongly, Government should take an effective step to solve the issue, knowing the future consequences of it.
The session was really informative and an eye opener for many students, to understand about the severity of the issue and gave lots of inputs regarding the need of protecting our own nature and locality from future major disasters.
