UG Department of Criminology organized a field exposure visit to Mangaluru District Prison for postgraduate students of MSW and M.Sc Counselling on 19 September 2022. Assistant superintendent Sri Rajendran and Jailor Sri. Sidramappa Explained to the students about prison and its establishment under three different levels, The Taluka level, the District Level and the Central Level and various other types of jails such as the Women’s Jails, Open Jails, Special Jails and Borstal Schools. They highlighted the functions of prisons such as prison education, prison labor and prison discipline which are very helpful in reforming the individuals.
Officials also informed about the Right to Legal Aid and the Right to Speedy Trial.
Prisoners should be provided with appropriate legal aid to enable them to have access to justice. It is something that constitutes a legal right. Speedy Trial is one of the most important fundamental rights of a prisoner that is implied through Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. They were informed about a literacy program for inmates that will enable them to read and write and how they utilize the services of well-educated prisoners. The visit concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Santhosh of II year MSW.
