On September 19, 2024, the IQAC, UG Department of Criminology, and the Leo Club RMB in collaboration with Creative Learning System, Mangalore organized an orientation program titled "Mastering Competitive Exams: Orientation and Guidance" which was attended by a total of 147 UG students. The speaker for the session was Mr. Sobhan George Abraham, a Civil Services Preparation Expert. Additional guests included Mr. Avinash Kumar, Former Assistant Commandant of the CRPF, Mr. Vivek, a mathematics expert, and Mr. Rahul Choudhary.
The session commenced under the guidance of Ms. Sarik Ankitha, Dean of Student Progression and Head of the UG Department of Criminology, and Mr. Anees Rahman, Assistant Professor of UG Criminology. Mr. Avinash Kumar provided an overview of the orientation and introduced today's speaker Mr. Sobhan George Abraham.
Following the introduction, Mr. Sobhan delivered a detailed briefing on the Civil Services Examinations. He began by explaining how these exams have the potential to transform lives and provide numerous opportunities for those who clear them. He detailed the various services under the Civil Services Exams, which include 25-27 services such as IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, IRTS, IIS, IAAS, and the Indian Postal Service. He also referenced notable officers like H.T. Sangliana,IPS officer, and Dr. S. Jaishankar, Foreign Affairs Minister and former IFS officer, as examples of success in the civil services.
Mr. Sobhan outlined the eligibility criteria, explaining that graduates from any recognized university are eligible, with a minimum age limit of 21 years. The maximum age limit varies depending on categories like General, OBC, SC/ST, and PwD quotas. He then explained the three stages of the examination: Preliminary, Mains and Interview. The Preliminary stage consists of two papers, General Studies and CSAT,with a minimum cut-off rank above 85. The Mains stage has seven papers, including Compulsory English,Regional Language,Essay and General Studies Papers 1-4, along with two optional subject papers.
He also introduced the Creative Learning System, Mangalore, highlighting the experienced faculty with 10-20 years of expertise in their respective subjects. A Question and Answer session followed, where students asked questions related to current affairs, selecting the best optional subjects for the mains, and the topics covered in the General Studies papers.
As the session concluded, Dr. Prashanth Bhat, HoD of Rural Development, presented a memento to the speaker as a token of appreciation.
The orientation session was highly informative and provided students with valuable insights into the Civil Services Examinations. The detailed guidance offered by the speaker on exam preparation, eligibility, and career opportunities gave students a clear understanding of the exam process and its potential to shape their future careers. The event not only inspired students but also equipped them with practical advice and resources to excel in competitive exams.
