Ten students of Psychology (6 III B.A and 4 II B.A) participated in SCINTILLA, Ignite the spark in you, a Psycho educational programme on 27th February 2016 organised by M.Sc counselling, School of Social Work, Mangalore.
Winner in Photography Competition
Akshara (I B.A) won the online Photography Competition in the 17-21 years category at Reinventing Youngistaan 1.2 organized by Youth Empowered in Action for Humanity in association with Citizens Forum for Mangalore Development.
Visit to Snehasadan
To commemorate the World AIDS day, a visit to Snehasadan materialised on 5th December, 2015. This initiative was by the final year students of Psychology along with the faculty Ms. Yamini Gowda P.C. They were escorted by the staff in charge Miss Prema Pinto and a brief introduction about the Institution was given by Mr Jude Jeevan Correa.
He mentioned that Snehasadan is a Non Profit organisation that gives free service to the HIV and AIDS infected victims. The Sneha Charitable Trust was established in the year 1991, by the Camillian community. At present, the Sneha Charitable Trust runs 4 centres (Snehadaan, Bengaluru, Snehasadan, Mangaluru, Snehatheeram, Kochi, Snehakiran, Secundarabad) and holds responsibility for providing care and support to the HIV/AIDS victims. He also gave the students instructions on the do’s and dont’s while talking to the children.
Snehasadan, Mangalore, is a home for 39 HIV/AIDS infected children and 24 orphans. It provides recreational and counselling therapies for the children to make them understand the necessity of developing health related behaviours.
The children were then called and seated in a circle where the students conducted games, action songs and also put up some entertainment programmes. After the programme, the children were given some eatables. The entire initiative was garnered by the students.
OUTCOME:
1. The visit gave information of how NGOs work towards certain key issues.
2. This visit was entirely a students’ initiative.

“Child Protection- A need and opportunity”
Department of Post-graduate studies in Social Work, Milagres College, Kallianpur, Udupi in collaboration with UNICEF and Shanti Sandesha Trust, Mangalore organized a two day State-level Conference on the theme “Child Protection- A need and opportunity” on 16th and 17th November, 2015. Ms. Sreenidhi S (I B A) accompanied by the faculty Ms. Yamini Gowda P C participated in the same.
There were input sessions on different arenas concerning child protection such as Rights based programming and Child protection frame, Legislation on Child Protection, Children in Conflict with Law: rehabilitation and prevention, Participatory Approach for Protection of Child Rights, Need for research and setting data base for child protection for two full days.
Panel Discussions on Adolescents, a special category in child protection as well as Protection of children from abuse were held by the moderators Ms. Suchitra Rao, Senior Consult, UNICEF, GOK, Bangalore and Prof. Ida D’Souza, Manipal University respectively.
OUTCOME:
1. The Conference was an eye opener with regard to the issues concerning children.
Internship at Mangala Jyothi Integrated School, Vamanjoor
from 3rd to 11th November 2015
The Department of Psychology has coordinated and mobilized nine students of Psychology(UG) namely Sreenidhi S, Haneen Abdul Khader, Charlene Mariette D’Souza, Akshara, Paige Benedicta Texeira, Caroline Gloria D’Souza, Hiba Habeeb, Athena Aranha and Roshini Monica Goveas under the supervision of faculty Ms Yamini Gowda P.C to intern for ten days at SDM Mangala Jyothi Integrated School, Vamanjoor from 3rd November to 11th November 2015.
The internship offered an ample opportunity of hands-on experience to practice and /or refine an area of interest for work/further studies among the students. It has provided a culminating experience to integrate the practicalities involved in their experiential based learning in the School.
Mental Health Awareness Programme
Seven students of Psychology namely Sushmitha S.S, Mariyam Amreen, Akshara, Charlene D’Souza, T. Priya, Sreenidhi S and Sharlet Shaju accompanied by the faculty Ms Yamini Gowda P.C participated in a half a day Mental Health Awareness programme organized by District Wenlock Hospital and Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru in commemoration of World Mental Health day on 10th October 2015 in the Paediatric Block of District Wenlock Hospital, Mangaluru. There was a poster presentation Competition and our College team comprising of Sushmitha S.S (III B.A), Mariyam Amreen (II B.A) and Akshara (I B.A) secured the second prize.
