Under the banner, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Post -Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru and SRL Trinity Vision Private Limited, Mangaluru, had organised a National Webinar on “Strategies to Prevent Psycho-Social Problems in Adolescents” to commemorate the birthday of Late. Dr. B. Ashoka, Former Head of the Department of Criminology and Forensic Science (1979-2016) on 16th January 2021 at 10am on online Google meet platform.
Addressing the participants, Chief Guest Dr. Jacinta D’Souza, Former Principal of the College cherished the moments that she had with Late. Dr. B. Ashoka for about 25 years in the College.
‘Dr. Ashoka was blessed with innumerable qualities of mind and heart. He was a person who was hardworking and compassionate’, she said. She stressed that youngsters must get inspired by his journey of life to work selflessly for the betterment of society.
President of the event, Dr. Juliet C.J. Principal of the College expressed the need of the session on the theme as we are in the post-pandemic period. She also conveyed her gratitude to Dr. Ashoka for his loyalty towards the Institute throughout his service.
Mrs. Shwetha B. Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Srinivas Hospital, Mukka, Surathkal, Mangaluru and also alumni of the College (Under Graduate 2011-2014 Batch) was one of the resource persons spoke on the ‘Risk Factors and Methods to Prevent Suicide’.
She presented the topic along with the recent statistics on suicide of youths in India. She stressed on the various risks factors responsible for suicide in adolescents such as biological causes, Genetic predisposition, history of psychiatric illness, family history and hormonal imbalance. She also spoke on the suicide contagion and need for the rehabilitation of survivors of suicide. Session was concluded with the quote ‘You have the power to say, ‘This is not how my story will end’’.
The Resource Person, Dr. Vishnu Karthik, Assistant Professor, Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, Mary Matha College of Arts and Science, Tamil Nadu and also alumni of Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science of the college addressed on “Challenges to Curb Drug Abuse”.
He spoke about the various kinds of drugs and routes of its administration. He also emphasized on the circumstances that leads to drug abuse in youths. He stressed on the prevention of drug abuse and rehabilitation of drug addicts especially among youth.
Dr. Jenis Mary, Vice-Principal of the College, Mr. Devaseelan S. Managing Director and Convener of today’s Webinar, SLR Trinity Vision Private Limited, Surathkal, Mangaluru and Dr. Saritha D’Souza, Head of the Post-Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science of the college and Co-convener of the Webinar and Mr. Roshan D’Souza, Assistant Professor of the Department were present on this occasion.
Faculties and students of both Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Department of various universities, Autonomous colleges across the country, and of the organising college, Alumni’s of the department and people from the field and allied areas were present during the discussion. A total of 258 participants registered and attended the webinar.
