The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science had organized an exposure visit to the second year students of both Questioned Documents and Impression Evidences (QDIE) and Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice (FPCJ) as a part of their academic practical curriculum. They visited the Court of Judicial Magistrate, Mangaluru, Dakshina Kannada District, from 12th to 26th April 2023. Altogether, 23 students had attended the court cases every day in batches from 10.30am to 1.30pm based on their specialization.
Sixteen (16) students of Questioned Documents and Impression evidence had attended a series of court proceedings pertaining to the expert witnesses in the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class. The main aim of the visit was to understand the role of expert witnesses during Criminal trials, to learn the procedure of cross examination of witnesses and pre-trial preparation, to study the convicted cases based on the scientific evidences and expert witnesses
Similarly, seven students (07) of Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice specialization had attended a series of both the Criminal Court and Family Court trials for about 5 days each respectively. The objectives of the visit are to gain insight into the court proceedings, role of defense lawyers and prosecutors, types of evidence presented, expert witnesses and victims, to learn case laws and convicted cases earlier related to family issues and criminal cases, to promote networking with law enforcement agencies and to understand their functions.
Dr. Saritha D’Souza, Head of the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya along with the faculty and students expressed gratitude to Sri. Ravindra M. Joshi, Principal and Sessions Judge, Dakshina Kannada District, for providing an opportunity to attend the court proceedings and to interact with the advocates pertaining to the cases.
