As a part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science (CFS), School of Social Work (Autonomous), Roshni Nilaya and the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Deralakatte, Yenepoya Medical College, Yenepoya University (Deemed to be), Mangaluru had organized a workshop on ‘Procedures of Crime Scene Investigation’ followed by ‘Forensic Science Exhibition’ on Monday, 6th October 2023 at 2pm in the college campus. The doctors who had taken up the Post Graduate Diploma in Forensic Anthropology and Odontology (PGDFAO) Program were the delegates. The main objective of this workshop was to introduce the delegates with the fundamental principles and protocols of managing a crime scene, to provide hands on training through the simulated crimes scene, to provide insight into the functions of various divisions of FSL through exhibition.

Dr. Saritha D'Souza, Head of the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science was the resource person who delivered the session on the concept of Criminology, Police procedures of investigation and Crime Scene Management. She spoke on the 3‘I’s of investigation, various methods of searching and sketching crime scenes, techniques of handling and preservation of scientific evidences, chain of custody, significance of Physical and Trace evidences in the Criminal Justice System. Further she discussed about the role of police and forensic experts in prevention and detection of various crimes. A practical exposure was provided for the delegates by creating a simulated crime scene where they were tasked to determine whether the incident was a homicide or suicide through the scientific evidences.

Thereafter, Forensic Science Exhibition was also arranged for the delegates, where the students of Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science explained the various divisions of Forensic Science Laboratory and its functions, under the guidance of Assistant Professors of the department Mr. Roshan D’Souza, Mr. Niketh PS and Ms. Athira VJ.

Dr. Mohammad Nasir Ahmad, Assistant Professor, Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Deralakatte, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangaluru, extended his gratitute to the faculties and the students of the department for organizing a successful workshop. He also expressed his anticipation for potential collaborative programs in the future. The delegates expressed their positive feedback that the session greatly enhanced their understanding of crime scene investigation procedures followed by the forensic experts which was only confined to the textbook knowledge but now got an opportunity to gain practical exposure during the workshop.

Altogether 7 delegates, 5 faculties and 38 students were present (50) on this occasion. Ms. Nelisha Cutinho, Student of second year MSc CFS from Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice (FPCJ) specialization compered the event. Ms. Jyothsna, Media Coordinator, Student of second year MSc CFS from the Questioned Document and Impression Evidences specialization compiled the report.
