The Post-Graduation Department of Criminology and Forensic Science had organized an online international session on “DNA and Its Significance in Forensic Science” for first year students of MSc Criminology and Forensic Science on 7th December 2023 at 6:30 pm via google meet. Mr.Sahil C, Tutor, Department of Forensic Medicine, Anna Medical College, Mauritius, an alumnus of the institutes was the resource person. The objective of the session is to enhance knowledge on the concept of DNA and its role in the Forensic Science.
Ms. Athira V. J., Assistant Professor, Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, introduced the speaker. The session began with the conceptual note on DNA in blood, it's structure, component, Central dogma, Medico-legal importance of DNA, Collection, Preservation, transportation of evidentiary materials, processing of evidence for DNA analysis were discussed. DNA analysis was explained along with the process of extraction using ethanol precipitation and ultrafiltration, and development by gel electrophoresis. Amplification of extracted DNA using Polymerase Chain Reaction. The other method Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) was also discussed. Further, the sequencing and matching of extracted DNA with the reference sample, importance, major difference in DNA’s genome and numbering in different individual was explained. The session concluded with the discussion on the queries put forth by the students.
The students expressed that the session was interesting and informative. Students felt that they could nteract freely with the speaker where all the queries were discussed effectively. The session concluded at 9.00pm with the vote of thank delivered by Ms. Elizabeth Deepika, class representative of first year MSc CFS.
