The Post-Graduation Department of Criminology and Forensic Science had organized a guest lecture on “Collection, Preservation and Forensic Analysis of Blood” for first year student of MSc Criminology and Forensic Science on 18th November 2023 at 10.30am in the PG Department of CFS. Dr. Swathi D Assistant Professor and Course Coordinator, Department of Forensic Science and Criminology, Institute of Allied Health Science, Srinivas University, Mukka, Mangaluru and also alumni of the department was the resource person. The objective of the session was to understand the methods of collection of blood samples from crime scene, to know the methods of its preservation and the various forensic analysis of blood conducted in the Laboratory.
Mr. Niketh P S., Assistant Professor, PG Department of Criminology and Forensic Science introduced the speaker. Further, Dr. Swathi D began the session by explaining the concept of blood that included content, composition and importance of blood during the investigation of crime to narrow down the case. She spoke about the difference between plasma and serum, importance of blood corpuscles, antigen-antibody, blood grouping and Rh factor. Thereafter, she gave a detailed description on collection, preservation of different types of blood samples found in the crime scene, forensic analytical examination of the blood such as visual examination, preliminary or presumptive test and confirmatory test with a precise presentation.
Students expressed that the session was interactive and knowledgeable. They could openly clarify all doubts and queries without any hesitation. They also wished to have many more sessions like this in future. The session concluded at 12.00pm with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Poorvi, student of first year MSc Criminology and Forensic Science. Altogether, 19 students and two faculties were present during the session. Ms. Vedhaashini S Gowda, a student of first years MSc CFS cum media coordinator compiled the report of the session.
