Dr. Kusum, an expert in prison counseling, conducted an orientation for II MSc counseling students on the 3rd of January 2020. Head of the MSc Counseling Psychology Department Ms. Rosa Mathew welcomed and introduced the recourse.
The Speaker began the session by interacting with the students and asking them to introduce themselves and the reason why they have chosen to study counseling. The Speaker continued by addressing the students about her small organisation called beautiful minds and how it began. The speaker shared some of her personal experiences, how and when she got into this field of interest and how she wants to make a difference in a individuals life by guiding the inmates in the prison by listening to them and being there with the individuals through therapeutic guidance. The speaker mentioned about the different reasons why people have ended up in prison and how they have started moving towards mental illness.
The speaker also mentioned how counselors can help these inmates who have mental health issues, support, listen empathically, and be there for them. The speaker mentioned that the families of those prison inmates are in need of help too and how counselor can help those families who are having issues. The speaker ended the session by telling a verse from Bhagavad Gita ‘ Karmanye Vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshou Kada Chana, Ma Karma Phala Hetur Bhurmatey Sangostva Akarmani’ meaning you have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruit of action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty. Sr. Vimala Jothi proposed the vote of thanks to the resource person for conducting the orientation and sharing her experience and giving her expertise about the field of prison counseling.
