The PG department of School of Social Work, Mangaluru in association with IQAC organised a workshop on Gender sensitization, Sexual harassment and Human rights on 13th March 2023 from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM in the Seminar hall. The resource person for the day was Advocate Rushila Rebello, an academician and practicing lawyer of the Mumbai High Court. There were 40 participants, who were students of MSc counselling and MSc Criminology and Forensic Sciences. The objectives of the forenoon session on Gender sensitization were to make the participants sensitize towards the sex and gender differentiation and debunk the existing myths and discriminations related to specific gender roles in the society. It also aimed to empower the students to have a wider outlook towards gender related issues and address those effectively for the betterment of the human existence.
The afternoon sessions focused on the aspects of sexual harassment, POSH Act and Human Rights. The objective of this session was to make participants aware of the magnitude of the sexual harassment prevailing in the society, how women are mistreated and stifled from reaching their full potential and the ways to legally address these issues. There was also a session on Human Rights which was aimed to get the participants acquainted with the various laws existing for the well-being and meaningful co-existence of people in the society and the country at large.
The sessions were very interactive with informative lectures, videos, group discussions and group activities. They were indeed very informative and learning oriented as the participants gained a wider knowledge about the gender related issues, the extent of sexual harassment and other ill-treatments towards women that stifled their potential and how these issued can be legally addressed. Furthermore, the sessions aided the participants to introspect and demystify their own gender related ideas and stereotypes.
