A special lecture on the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates in correctional settings was organized for seventy-seven students in their second and third years of criminology on March 30th, 2023, at Maria Paiva Hall. The resource person for the lecture was Mr. Denis D'Souza, a psychiatrist and counselor at the Mangalore District Prison. He provided an overview of the history of the prison, noting that it was first established in 1904, and explained that a new prison was built in 2012 to accommodate the increased number of inmates. Mr. D'Souza also highlighted the various services and facilities provided to the inmates, such as free legal aid from the district legal service authority, individual and group counseling, adult education programs, phone call facilities, library access, and e-mulaqat. He further elaborated on the holistic rehabilitation activities conducted in the prison, including yoga sessions, medical camps, encouraging family interaction, legal assistance, vocational and educational training, soft skills training, and celebrations of various festivals.
