Mahalekshmi Shaji of II BA Criminology completed her internship at the District Crime Record Bureau (DCRB) from 9th to 23rd December 2024, gaining practical exposure to law enforcement and the legal system. She learned about the police hierarchy from the Director General of Police (DGP) to constables, emphasizing the importance of discipline and clarity in roles. The recruitment processes for different ranks were explained, highlighting the rigorous selection methods for ensuring public safety. Her internship provided insights into key provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), focusing on offenses such as murder, assault, trespassing, and cybercrimes. Case studies and discussions helped her understand how these offenses are practically dealt with and the prescribed punishments. She also observed how law enforcement agencies investigate crimes, file reports, and prepare cases for court. Mahalekshmi was introduced to new legal frameworks, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), which modernize India's criminal justice system. These frameworks address contemporary challenges like cybercrimes and the admissibility of electronic evidence. During her internship, she participated in various tasks, such as submitting performance reports, documenting case details, and reviewing cybercrime reports. This practical exposure deepened her understanding of administrative and investigative procedures. Overall, the internship bridged the gap between academic knowledge and real-world law enforcement practices. Mahalekshmi gained valuable insights into policing, crime investigation, and adapting to modern challenges in maintaining justice.
