The BSW Department of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru organized a Webinar on “The Soliga Tribal Livelihood and Rights in Chamarajanagara District '' on 20th May 2021. The Webinar was held on Google meet platform from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The resource person of this Webinar was Dr. Made Gowda C, Senior Research Associate and Coordinator, Asoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), B.R. Hills.

The Webinar began with a welcome address by Prof. Vineetha Rai, Head of BSW Department and Registrar (Evaluation), School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, who welcomed the dignitaries and introduced the Resource Person to the participants of the Webinar.

Dr. Jenis Mary, Vice Principal of the college gave the Keynote address and the Presidential address was given by the Principal Dr. Juliet C.J. who wished for the success of the Webinar. Prof. Evelyn Benis welcomed the Alumni of Roshini Nilaya who participated in the Webinar with her cheerful gesture.

Dr. Made Gowda started the session by explaining about the Soliga Tribes and Culture, during which he showed the photographs of his work among the tribal community. He also sang a few tribal songs to the excitement of the students. He also told how the Soligas have in-depth knowledge of forest, flora and fauna which passed on from generation to generation.

He shared his experience and his struggles in dealing with various government policies. He spoke about how the government proposed Wild Life Sanctuary project by evacuating the indigenous tribes from their own place and how they coped with the difficulty of obtaining permission to live in the forest region with wild animals while not coming in the way of wild pathways, as the Soligas worship nature and are dependent on nature for their livelihood. He also assisted the indigenous people in obtaining their Community Rights, which included NTFP collection, grassing, fishing, sacred site worship, conservation, protection, and regeneration rights.

Then Dr. Made Gowda responded to the queries of the participants. The participants thanked the resource person for the valuable information. The Webinar was informative and gave a deep knowledge to the participants about the Soliga Tribes, their culture, life and the work of a Social Worker and his contribution to the community.

The Webinar ended with the Vote of Thanks by Ruth from III BSW. Prof. Vineetha Rai concluded the Webinar by thanking the resource person, the organizing committee and staff of BSW Department.

The student representatives of the organizing committee were Ruth. E. III BSW, Vishnu II BSW, Josepheena II BSW, Sidrah Ali Khan II BSW and Sinchana D Shetty I BSW.
