On July 25, 2024, the BSW Department- SAHAYOG Forum and IQAC of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore organized a visit to SDM Mangala Jyothi Integrated School, Vamanjoor, Mangalore, for 44 BSW students (14 first-year and 30 second-year students).

Objective

The purpose of the visit was to provide students with practical insights into inclusive education practices and the challenges faced by children with special needs promoting sensitivity and learning.

About SDM Mangala Jyothi Integrated School

Established in 1981 by 'The Society for Welfare of the Disabled', the school aims to provide quality education to children with special needs, including orthopedically challenged, hearing and visually impaired, autistic, and mentally retarded children, along with normal children from economically backward families. Currently, the school has 585 students, including vocational trainees.

Program Details

- The session was initiated by Mr. Ramesh Acharya K, High School Headmaster, who elaborated on the school’s history and its commitment to inclusive education. He detailed the development of integrated programs and individualized support plans, highlighting success stories and the positive impact on children with special needs.

- Mr. Guruprasad M.S., Speech Therapist at the school, provided insights into training intellectually disabled children. His presentation emphasized the importance of communication, cognitive development, and social skills, particularly through the use of sign language.

- Students interacted with 5 to 6 intellectually disabled children, observing their behavior and understanding their challenges. This experience offered valuable lessons on the necessity of tailored educational support.

- The visit included tours of the school’s art gallery, physiotherapy center, and book binding center. These visits showcased the talents and potential of intellectually disabled individuals, underscoring the significance of creative and vocational development opportunities.

- The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Elfreeda D'Souza, I BSW student.

Organizers

The visit was meticulously organized under the leadership of Asst. Prof. Veena B K, HoD of the BSW Department, with support from Asst. Prof. Anusuya Kamath, Asst. Prof. Colin D'Souza, and Asst. Prof. Deepika Sanil.

Outcome

The visit significantly enhanced sensitivity and learning among social workers, providing firsthand exposure to the realities faced by students with special needs.
