The SAHAYOG Forum, BSW Department, and IQAC of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru, organized a vibrant Onam celebration on September 10, 2024, for the undergraduate students. Held at the Maria Paiva Hall, the event saw enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members alike, making it a memorable day of cultural festivities and community bonding.
The celebration began with a Pookalam Competition, where students from the BA and BSW courses showcased their creativity and teamwork by crafting intricate floral designs. Each class participated with zeal, creating beautiful and detailed Pookalam that highlighted the traditional art form of Kerala.
The formal event commenced at 10:00 AM with an introduction to the significance of Onam, followed by a captivating Thiruvathira dance performance by the final-year BSW students. Through their graceful and synchronized movements, the dancers beautifully depicted the cultural richness and heritage of Kerala, leaving the audience mesmerized.
The day continued with a variety of fun-filled games and activities that engaged both students and faculty members. Notable activities included the Sundarikku Bottu game, Boys Saree wearing Competition, and the Needle and Thread Game, all of which added to the lively atmosphere and fostered a sense of camaraderie.
Adding to the festive spirit, both the teaching and non-teaching staff participated enthusiastically in a spirited game of Musical Chairs, which brought smiles and laughter, creating a joyous environment.
A highlight of the celebration was the surprise flash mob performances by students from the BA and BSW courses. These energetic performances infused a sense of excitement and added an element of surprise, captivating the audience and enhancing the overall festive mood.
On September 11, 2024, the Pookalam Competition prizes were awarded, with cash prizes given to the winners: First Prize to Third-year BSW students and Second Prize to Third-year BA students.
The Onam celebration was a resounding success, fostering a spirit of togetherness and joy among students and faculty. It provided a platform for everyone to bond, celebrate the rich cultural traditions of Kerala, and create lasting memories. The day's events were thoroughly enjoyed by all, truly reflecting the essence of Onam. The event saw a participation of 110 participants.
