Empowering Young Minds

The PG Dept of MSW School of Social Work, in partnership with the Dakshina Kannada Rural Development Society, hosted an inspiring community outreach program at the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Government Higher Primary School, Sonandooru, on 13th March 2025. The event addressed critical themes of Health, Safety, and Gender Equality through dynamic sessions led by experts. A total of 45 participants attended the program.

Health & Hygiene in Focus

Health Education Officer Mrs. Ammi A energised students with practical advice on staying healthy in the scorching heat. She stressed the importance of hydration ("How many times did you drink water today?"), proper sanitation, and hygiene habits like washing hands before meals and after using toilets. With humour and clarity, she tackled nutrition, urging children to ditch processed snacks for leafy greens, iron-rich foods, milk, and eggs. Students giggled as she teased, "You love chicken and fish, but why push aside veggies?" She also addressed monsoon health risks, linking stagnant water to mosquito-borne diseases and rallying kids to pledge clean surroundings. Interactive claps, self-pats, and affirmations like "I choose good habits!" made the session lively and memorable.

Safety First: Building Boundaries:

Mrs.Ramya, Asst. Prof Dept of MSW School of Soacial Work Roshni  Nilaya, Mangalore empowered students with crucial lessons on personal safety through a Safe touch and unsafe touch. She explained how to identify trusted adults, navigate public spaces safely, and use the child helpline (1098). Addressing modern challenges, she cautioned against mobile addiction, urging students to balance screen time and stay alert to risks.

Breaking Gender Barriers:

Cecilia Maam (DKRDS) sparked a dialogue on equality, challenging stereotypes like "Girls sweep, boys do tough jobs." Highlighting trailblazers like Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams, she inspired students to rethink gender roles. Boys were playfully tasked with sweeping to normalise shared responsibilities. Linking health and equality, she encouraged kids to advocate for nutritious meals at home and reject outdated societal norms.

The event closed with students vowing to prioritise health, practice safety, and champion equality. Through laughter, interactive demos, and heartfelt pledges, the session left a lasting message: Small steps today can build a healthier, safer, and fairer tomorrow.

The event was coordinated by Mr. Melory  and Mr. Bhjarath  1sr MSW students.
