Erikson Psychology occupies a unique position straddling the line between physical and biological methodological orientations and a subject matter that spans the social and human sciences. Psychology as a much sought-after subject is one of the major subjects offered in the BA (Triple Major) undergraduate degree programme at School of Social Work, Mangaluru. The various courses are firmly grounded through both theory and practical classes to understand theories, principles, and nuances of the subject matter. The courses are based on disciplinary developments and relate to both Indian cultural ethos and contemporary realities. Psychology students gradually become aware of their own personality, motivation, aptitude, and other mental processes allowing them to become more introspective and appreciate the uniqueness of others. This encourages empathetic engagement which improves their personal and professional lives. Department of Criminology Criminology is the social science that studies crime. It is the study of not only crime in general, but also the effect of crime on society, the underlying factors, and the offenders involved. The focus is to determine what motivates people to commit crimes or act in criminal ways. School of Social Work is the only institution under Mangalore University that has offered Criminology as an optional subject for BA undergraduates since 1978, with the mission of providing quality education to raise social justice awareness. The students are taught the fundamental principles of crime, as well as social problems and their reparations. They also study Forensic Science, Scientific Investigation, Court Functions, Criminal Psychology, Cyber Investigation, Penology, Victimology, Forensic Medicine, Police Administration, Security, and Vigilance, among other subjects. Through laboratory experiments, students gain practical expertise in the relevant fields. To facilitate experiential learning, students are taken on field trips to significant penal, criminological, and forensic locations such as a police station, correctional institution, Reserve Battalion, Dog Squad, Forensic Lab, INS Hansa, Bomb Disposal Squad, Coastal Security Unit, and Cyber Police Station. Students gain academic knowledge in order to live and serve in a socially responsible manner. They also learn to face society with courage and develop into responsible citizens. The value of learning through service is significantly incorporated in the academic programme. It prepares students for professional practice in Social Work. Social Work Practicum is a very important component that aims at enabling students to understand the relevance between theory and practice and to concretize the theory learned in the classroom. We provide an excellent opportunity to students by exposing them to real-life situations through surveys, street plays, exposure visits, study tours, internships, and training in Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA). Students also get an opportunity to work with Government Organisations, whereby they learn about Government schemes and programmes which help them in reaching out to the community. Networkings with Non-Government Organisations expose the students to a wide variety of challenges and interventions. Values such as selflessness and service are blended with leadership skills and social sensitivity that transforms them into leaders of tomorrow. This enables faculty to identify the problems faced by students. The faculty guide the student by herself or himself or refer the student to a counsellor. Counselling helps individuals to understand one self realistically. It enables a student to understand his/her problem and overcome it through his/her effort with the help of a counsellor or an expert, who might also dialogue with the significant persons in the life of the student. Counselling also helps in total development of the student, facilitates the growth of his/her inner potentials and promotes a healthy connectedness with others in the institution. It is a valuable opportunity open to students wherein they learn to cope with the challenges of life as a whole, especially during times of turmoil and confusion so that they may grow in a healthy environment that ensures positive mental well-being. To the Department of Psychology and its students, the inauguration of the Sparsh Counselling Centre was a milestone and a moment to cherish. Students are taught basic programming skills, web design, accounting software, graphic design, and basic animation since 2005. Regular computer courses are also conducted for learners from outside the campus. Ten computers are exclusively used in the Internet lab. Internet facility is provided for students during working hours.
Language Lab"The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." - Ludwig Wittgenstein It is not the grade card that counts but the skills for employability that matters at the interviewer’s desk. This is the fact and an institution worth its name strives to build the necessary skill sets. Language competency is an imperative if not important skill set. Possessing competency in the English language provides much impetus to an individual’s advancement for self as well as her/his career. While the language learning process to some is not so difficult or challenging, to others it is a huge impediment both to the self as it comes in the way of their self-confidence and self-worth as also to their curricular advancement. English as a language is more so, as students come from a vernacular medium of instruction. In a typical English language classroom, the teaching-learning process is less effective due to the large numbers as also the varied level of student capability regarding the English language skill. The language lab has been a boon as it makes the teaching learning process student-centric, gives ample scope for peer learning, interactive and independent learning process. The Language Lab was founded in the year 2008 and as of now thirteen computer terminals and two software packages are available. The Language Lab is open to all the students of the institution and without any fee to provide equal opportunity to all who desire to learn. The Language Lab and the English Language Skill Development programmes provide the English department the means towards student progression scientifically and qualitatively and help in aiding in holistic development. Tense Buster is a menu-driven, user-friendly package that consists of five levels. It aids in the development of reading and listening skills and includes an audio backing. The second package, which includes both – [a teacher and a student terminal], is an ICT package that aids in learning and testing English language skills. The Linguaphone as a kind of gramophone is specially designed for helping in learning pronunciation or the other sound peculiarities of the language. Also in the lab is software for Listening Speaking & Reading (LSR). English Language learning programmes as a certificate course started way back in 2004. Alongside providing skill development for the students of the institution, as an outreach programme for young mothers who came to the kindergarten accompanying their children, a home-makers batch was initiated in the year 2008. The primary focus was on spoken English, and batches have made use of this facility. The Skill Development Programme is designed for students who require improving their language skills. There are three levels, and workshops are held in addition to lab sessions and practical sessions as part of classroom instructions. It is a certificate course and includes a written and viva-voce exam.

Research Lab NSSArise, awake and stop not until the goal is reached. – Swami Vivekananda The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides an opportunity to the student youth to take part in various government-led community service activities and programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide students with hands-on experience in community service. The National Service Scheme was officially launched on September 24, 1969, the centennial year of Mahatma Gandhiji's birth. As a result, NSS Day is observed every year on September 24th. Mahatma Gandhi urged students to always keep their social responsibilities in mind. The Motto of NSS is “Not me But You”. This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service. NSS symbol is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of the NSS for social transformation and upliftment. The NSS Badge: The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours. The Red colour in the badge signifies the energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers. The Navy Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind.

NSS volunteers also give a lot of awareness programmes to the community around either through street plays, rallies, slogan writings, painting, and so on. All of the NSS programmes thus aid in the growth of students' personalities, development of self-confidence as well as a sense of dedication to service. ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others’ - Mahatma Gandhi. She was awarded Best NSS Programme Officer at the state level in Karnataka in 2010-2011, as well as at the Mangalore University level. In the year 2010-2011, our NSS unit received the award for the best National Service Scheme (NSS) unit in the state of Karnataka. Assoc. Prof. Vineetha K. was the NSS Programme Coordinator from June 1, 2013, to December 18, 2019, at Mangalore University.

Brief History: The activities were mainly comprised of counselling. Later financial support, vocational guidance and medical referrals were taken up. The number of clientele had increased due to the foreign funding agencies through Action Aid, Catholic Near East Welfare Association (C.N.E.W.A USA), Espoir et Parrainage Belgium, School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND Japan) and other Indian sponsors. Later it was found that a number of other N.G.O’s sprung up in Mangalore which were also offering child/family sponsorship, thus duplicating our services. A periodic evaluation of the services along with the withdrawal of the funding of agencies, the focus was shifted from financial aid to counselling and community building so as to enable the families to be self dependant and self reliant. The number of clientele declined who came to the agency seeking financial support; however there was a tremendous increase in referrals for scholastic, emotional problems and dropouts. The cry for help came from teachers from schools and institutions to the agency to extend our services which have been presently our focus of work. Some of the etiological factors identified during our assessment were physical, emotional, sexual abuse, unhealthy parenting, marital discord, divorce and substance abuse of parents, migration, lack of awareness among the parents and teachers. Various problems related to Family, children, adolescents, psychological problems, geriatric problems, substance abuse, internet addictions etc are handled. Awareness programmes, health camps, street plays, workshops and training programme are conducted in the communities for women & youths, colleges/ Schools for teachers & students. Home visits have revealed that there is lot of substance abuse in the families and women are victimised. They have either lost their husbands due to the heavy consumption of alcohol/other drugs. They are harassed by the addicted husbands/Children/other members of the family. There is a dire need of intervention to reach out to the needy adolescents, youth and women who are the victims of these present social epidemics (Specially Substance abuse). Hence the need has been to strengthen the families through Self Help Groups, Neighbourhood groups, formation of Neighbourhood committees, Awareness programmes and counselling.

AmphitheatreThe campus of Roshni Nilaya is unique in more ways than one. It is placed in the midst of the main house which is built along traditional Mangalorean style architecture; an imposing structure with tiled roof, columns and pillars to add and the classic glazed tiles to adorn the floor meets the eye as we enter the campus. Unlike other institutions where concrete structures fall over each other, here we are surrounded by the estate with varieties of flower and fruit bearing trees, rich in traditional herbs and medicinal plants and trees. The ambience is one which is comforting and homelike and makes one feel welcome and at ease. Well-lit classrooms with all the amenities needed makes for amiable learning atmosphere because of a certain old-world charm that makes them look less stark. The entire campus has diverse spaces which facilitates unique learning experiences. Among all this, the one that is closest to the hearts of both students and teachers alike is the Roshni Amphitheatre. It nestles amidst a trove of cool, lush trees which warms one’s heart towards negotiating with whatever the task at hand. Built along simple lines it has the felicity to merge with the mood of the moment. It is the place a teacher thinks of when one wants to take the class away from the four walls. Here is a place where the cawing of the crows vibes well with the exchange of a rudimentary part of a syllabus at hand. The students are only too ready to deliberate upon a otherwise mundane part of the study material in hand. This is also the place where animated sessions on very critical and serious issues, be it student oriented, college related or one that concerns communities and societies are deliberated upon. Many a folk festival, plays and music shows have found their genesis. A place students love to retreat, be it for lunch time or drama practise, to celebrate intercollegiate victories, birthday bashes or Holi festival this is the place to be in. a retreat, a nook, an escape, in some way magical, a place to feel comforted, like the warm clasp of a friends hand. One has to be a part of Roshni to know what this means.
Student Opinion (SO):School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya gives a great deal of importance towards the academic development of an individual. At the same time, the college gives equal importance for the overall development of the members and their personal growth regarding the various skills an Individual is good at. Therefore, the college provides a number of opportunities to the staff and students to come forward and showcase their talents as frequent as possible and they are encouraged and appreciated during the particular events held at the campus! One such place provided by the Institute Is the 'amphitheatre', wherein a semi - circular seating is arranged for the audience towards the open air stage. It serves to be a beautiful nature - friendly area for a number of events held in the institution. As far as the architectural and structural arrangement of the hall is concerned, it provides good acoustics for plays, dance, music, lectures and so on. Over the years, the college has developed extremely talented musicians, excellent dancers and several artists, this particular area gives the students an opportunity to display their talents in the most vibrant manner! Weather permitting, the amphitheatre is open the entire year for college concerts and cultural programs, which in turn spreads high spirited energy among the spectators and lights up the whole atmosphere around!
