On February 2nd, 2025, the Forum for Sustainable Development, an initiative of Community Development Specialisation, PG Department of Social Work in collaboration with IQAC, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru conducted an extension programme on "Protection of Child Rights, POCSO Act 2012, and Tobacco Act" at St. Francis Xavier Higher Primary School, Bejai, Mangalore. The session commenced at 11:00 AM and was attended by both children and their parents. The programme was facilitated by Ms. Supriya M.A and Sr. Preeti, MSW students specializing in Community Development. Their objective was to promote awareness about child rights and protection. The event was organized in collaboration with St. Francis Xavier Higher Primary School, and the Forum for Sustainable Development expressed its gratitude for their support in making the programme successful.
The key topics covered during the session included:
Child Rights and Protection – Emphasizing the fundamental rights of children and the importance of ensuring their safety and well-being.
POCSO Act 2012 – Educating attendees on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which safeguards children against sexual abuse and exploitation.
Tobacco Act – Raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and the laws in place to protect children from exposure to tobacco products.
The session was interactive and informative, with active participation from both children of grade 5 to 7 (50) and parents (30). Engaging discussions helped reinforce the importance of safeguarding children's rights and well-being. The programme successfully achieved its goal of raising awareness and equipping attendees with valuable knowledge on child protection laws and practices.
