The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science had organized a visit to the Central Laboratory of Father Muller Hospital, Mangaluru on 26th May, 2023 at 11:00 am for second year students of Questioned Document and Impression Evidences (QDIE) specialization. Mrs. Amritha G Shetty, Assistant professor, Department of MSc Criminology and Forensic Science of the college accompanied the students.
The objectives of the visit were to know the general functions of a Laboratory, to learn the procedure of examination of collected samples and to acquire practical knowledge about the mechanism of instruments used in the laboratory. During the visit, the students got an exposure to the Biochemistry and Microbiology Laboratory. The students learned about the structure and function of the laboratory, collection of samples and procedures followed in the examination of the collected samples. They also explained concepts like calibration, internal quality control and external quality control. The mechanism and working of instruments such as Vitros integrated VT 7600 and electrophoresis was shown and explained among others. Further, the biohazard waste disposal method was explained and the various records maintained in the laboratory were discussed.
Students gave positive feedback with regard to the visit that they could gain practical knowledge about the procedures followed in the laboratory, working principles of various instruments, the several terms used during analysis of samples and report writing. The visit concluded at 1.30pm with a vote of thanks. Altogether, 15 students, a faculty of the department and around 20 faculties were the part of the interaction.
