The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic science had organised a week-long educational tour to Goa for both first and second year students of the department from 21st November 2023 to 25th November 2023. Mr. Roshan D’Souza, Mr. Niketh P S, and Ms. Athira V J Assistant Professors of the department and an intern Ms. Praveeksha Kamath accompanied the students.
The first visit was to Cyber Crime Police Station, Raibander, Goa on 22nd November 2023 at 10.45 am. Mr. Yogish Ganpal, Head Constable gave a brief introduction to the students about the establishment and functions of Cyber Crime Police station. Mr. Vidyanand Pawar, Police Inspector of Cyber Crime Police station, Raibander took a session on Cyber crimes, Cyber laws and Cyber security in India. He discussed about the different types of cyber crimes and its preventive measures. Later, the students got an opportunity to visit the cyber lab of the police station to witness different types of tools used in investigation such as the write blocker, UEFD, ENCASE, Salvation data VIP, Tower down analysis and Disk Duplicator. The students also got an insight on the procedures followed in the investigation
The next visit was to Modern Central Jail, Colvale, Goa on 23rd November 2023 at 11 am. The students interacted with the Doctor in charge of Prison Dr. Yogish Govekar. He explained about the role of the doctor in prison, procedure they follow in case of emergency situations and also stated that many inmates pretend to be sick after which they are sent to Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour. Inmates who are addicts are sent to de-addiction centre in the secondary hospital and they are brought back to the jail after their treatment. Mr. Anil Gaonkar, Jailer of the prison, gave a tour of the jail to the students where they got the opportunity to visit the kitchen block which had separate department for cooking and baking. Further, the students visited the skill development area which consisted of the handicraft section where the handicrafts were displayed which was prepared by the inmates, candle section where different types of candles were prepared, tailoring section, clay modelling models done by the inmates using clay were displayed and the paper bag section which consisted of crafts done using newspapers.
The third visit was to Kripa Foundation De-addiction Center, Anjuna, Goa on 24th November 2023 the session was conducted at 10:00 am by Mr. Izzidon, Counsellor. He spoke about the purpose of Kripa foundation that was started by Priest Joe Pereira in the year 1981 in Bandra Mumbai to battle against alcoholism, drug along with HIV and AIDS where at present there are 16 center all over India, in goa there are 2 centres. He began the session with 12 steps procedure that they use to battle with alcoholism and drugs to clean a person from these addictions. The daily routine followed by the patience inside the foundation that includes therapy, literature session, meals and games and the output times. There were total of 32 inmates in which 6 were in detox and rest in other procedures. In the second part of session he covered the topic of alcoholism, types of addictions, damage caused by the addictions, types of drinkers and the problem affecting them. Further, students clarified the doubts about the procedures followed and internship programs along with their recruitment for the job.
The next visit was to the National Forensic Science University Curit, Ponda, Goa on 25th November 2023 at 10:30am. The institute was started in 2021 at Goa which has dedicated laboratories for Forensic Physics, Forensic Chemistry, Toxicology, Forensic Biology & DNA, Questioned Documents, Cyber Security and Digital Forensics. The students were introduced to cyber intel department of the college by Dr. Vikash Rai, Assistant Professor, Department of Cyber Security & Digital Forensics introduced to different branches of Cyber Forensic that includes multimedia forensic, its operation and usage. Drone forensics, its laboratory application, the testing process, Vulnerability and Penetration Test (VAPT) conduction was explained. At the same time second years were introduced to Forensic Science and its different laboratories by Dr. Jerin Mohan, Assistant Professor, Department of Forensic Sciences. Dr. Suryakant Patil and Dr. Abhishek Singh, Assistant Professors, Department of Forensic Sciences explained different application and cases that are solved in the laboratories, accompanied to DNA laboratory, cases or studies related DNA was studied and analysed. They also showed and explained the use of different instruments and apparatus used in the field. Then they were taken to Question Document laboratories and explained the techniques used identification of counterfeit currency using UV chamber and handwriting analysis or forgery identification using Stereomicroscope. Further, students visited the crime scene museum maintained by the institution.
The next visit was to Indian Naval Aviation Museum, Vasco Da Gama, Goa on 25th November 2023 at 3.30pm. The visit was to look through the different helicopter and submarines, other Naval, Aviations used by the Indian navy and air force to fight different battle fought. The Indian Naval Aviation was started A little earlier, on 04 February 1953, the first Indian Naval Aircraft - the Short Sealand [IN101] - landed at Kochi. IN101 joined the Fleet Requirement Unit, which later became the first Indian Naval Air Squadron - INAS 550 - on 17 June 1959. the museum had the information of all Indian Navy Ranks the Navy has Admiral of the Fleet, Admiral, Vice Admiral, Rear Admiral, Commodore, Captain, Commander, and Lieutenant Commander and their success stories. Different units of naval aviation centre. Different aircrafts and submarines models were displaced along with description and where it was used.
Students in between the educational tour visited other historical places like churches, beaches, market streets etc. The students expressed that the visit was helpful to know the functioning of various organizations practically, got an opportunity to learn through field visits, relax, recreate and to spend time with each other with co-curriculum activities. Altogether, 37 students, one intern and 3 faculties of the department were part of the academic tour.
