As part of academic curriculum, the Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru, organized an exposure visit to Father Muller Deaddiction Centre and Asylum for the students of 2nd MSc CFS specializing in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice. The visit, held on 7 March 2025 from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM, aimed to provide students with practical insights into the structure, functioning, and rehabilitation procedures of the institution. A total of eight students, an intern, Ms. Chandni Devi and a faculty, Asst. Prof. Gayathri K. S participated in the visit.
Upon arrival, the group was warmly welcomed by the institution’s staff. A brief orientation session was conducted by Mr Shripathy Bhat, Counsellor and administration faculty member, who provided an overview of the centre’s objectives and the rehabilitation process. This was followed by a detailed briefing on the institution’s procedures by other interns present at the centre. They systematically explained the step-by-step process involved in de- addiction treatment and psychiatric rehabilitation, offering valuable insights into the therapeutic approaches used.
The students were taken on a guided tour of the facility, visiting key areas such as the playroom, kitchen, patient rooms, and the counselling chamber. Each section was introduced with an explanation of its role in the rehabilitation process. For the asylum visit, Ms. Zita served as the guide, providing a comprehensive understanding of its structure, daily routine, and the procedures followed for the admission, stay, and discharge of patients. The detailed insights into patient management highlighted the systematic approach adopted by the institution to ensure effective rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
A significant part of the visit involved an interaction with two inmates of the de-addiction centre, who voluntarily shared their personal experiences and the lessons they had learned throughout their recovery journey. Their stories provided a deeply moving and first hand perspective on the struggles of addiction and the importance of professional intervention in overcoming it. This interaction allowed the students to gain a more empathetic understanding of the psychological and social challenges faced by individuals battling substance abuse.
The exposure visit to Father Muller De-addiction Centre and Asylum was a highly informative and transformative experience. It provided students with a deeper understanding of de-addiction and psychiatric rehabilitation, along with the structured processes involved in patient care. The interactive sessions, first hand experiences shared by the inmates, and the guided tour of the facility enriched the students’ academic learning by connecting theoretical knowledge with practical applications. The visit successfully met its objective of enhancing students’ comprehension of forensic psychology, mental health care, and rehabilitation methodologies, making it a valuable addition to their academic curriculum.
Mr. Santhosh Praburaj A., student of 2nd MSc CFS explained about the course and thanked the gathering and Ms. Fathima Farasath of 2nd MSc CFS compiled the report.
