35 students and 2 faculties from M.Sc. Counselling Department went on a study tour from 29th November to 3rd December 2019 at Don Bosco Institute of Counselling and Spirituality. The Focus area of the study tour was Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
On the first day of the study tour on 29th December 2019, Fr. K.C. Thomas, Director of the Institute introduced the topic ‘Emotional Freedom Technique’ followed by history, techniques and its application. Practical exposure to the technique was beneficial to the budding Counselling Psychologists. The day ended with a short clipping called ‘David's water phobia’.
The next three days of the study tour was focused on NLP, facilitated by Fr. Kuriakose. Facilitator introduced NLP with brief history and the process of development. The students were told how powerful NLP is, by which they were made aware of how people understand the environment through their dominant modalities.
The Communication model was elaborated. Through different modes of exercises students were made to understand functions of the right and left brain and the learning styles andthe identification of their dominant preference.
Further the group was given information about cueing of the eyes and the role of the same in communication as well the importance of it in counselling. Students were given practical session to understand and learn.
The communication model was discussed. Distortion, beliefs, values, language, generalisation filters was elaborated upon. Students were also given detailed information about blame- frame and outcome frame questions. ‘Dancing on the Timeline’ technique was then taught. All the techniques were practiced in groups which helped the students get clarity and confidence to practice what they learnt. The 4 days at Don Bosco Ended with games, fun –filled activities and dance sessions.
On 3rd December, the M.Sc. Counselling troop set out to enjoy and relish the beauty of Trivandrum city. It was a hazy morning and the journey began by visiting the “Madre de deus” church in vettukadu which has sea in front and it was a feast to the eyes indeed to see the beautiful carving on the walls of the church. The group then headed towards Kannakakunnu Palace followed by Napier Museum, Sree Chitra Art Gallery, Aquarium, Zoo and Reptiles. The Kovallam beach visit was a mesmerising experience. Students made memories, friends and took home a plethora of their learning , experience and education.
