A Workshop on ‘Person Centered Therapy’ was organised by the department of M.Sc. Counselling for the I M.Sc. Counselling students on 22nd March 2021. The resource person for the workshop was Mrs Lugina Miranda. The workshop started with a Prayer song, sung by Anjana J, followed by the welcome speech by Vishanth Menezes.

The session began at 09:00 a.m. with a short introduction of the participants as asked by the resource person.

The resource person, Mrs Lugina Miranda introduced the topic PCT with the basic overview of psychotherapy, person centred therapy and life of Carl Rogers. She explained in detail the non-directive style of Counselling which is the core of this therapy. The resource person further explained the humanistic approach and the fact that people are capable of self-directed growth. Therefore, the Self-actualization concept was explained in detail.

 

 

 

The 3 core conditions of Roger's for Counselling that is unconditional positive regard, empathy and genuineness were discussed with examples. Further the principles of PCT like, self-actualization, experiential theory, were explained. The resource person also emphasized the importance of body language. Later she expounded on the specific goals of PCT like helping the client to self-actualize, non-advising, focusing on continuous growth and self-exploration.

Mrs. Lugina explained in detail the significance of therapeutic techniques, setting boundaries, counselling setting and sitting position. She emphasized on the importance and causes of the feelings, Further she gave the students an overview of the basic listening sequence. The importance of tone of the voice and the body language were explained to the students with examples.

The resource person then elaborated on the concept of self-importance, self-care and self-acceptance. Lastly, following tasks were given to the students to practice,

The workshop came to an end at 01:00 pm with a photo session, feedback and the vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Rajani B.
