2. A  UGC SPONSORED WORKSHOP   ON   “Enhancing Professional Social Work Skills”FOR  Medical & Psychiatric Social Workers On 28/02/2014 Resource Persons: Dr.Prakashi Rajaram &Dr. Priya Thomas (NIMHANS)  Focused Group: Medical & Psychiatric Social Workers

Objective:

·         Understanding the current scenario and appreciate the contributions of Medical and Psychiatric Social Work (MPSW) Professionals.

·         Identifying the sources of Professional and Personal Satisfaction.

·         Self Disclosure and learning from sharing.

 

·         Understanding/Identifying the Best Practices in the Current situation of MPSW Practice.       

 

3. International Seminar on “Gerontology- A Social Work Perspective”

School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya in association with AdvantAGE Seniors, Bangalore hosted an International Seminar on “Gerontology- A Social Work Perspective” here on  Saturday the 1st of March 2014 . Rev Fr. Patrick Rodrigues Director of Father Muller Charitable Institution, Mangalore inaugurated the seminar. He gave a brief perspective on health problems of the aged and spoke about how gerontology is a multi disciplinary subject which requires co ordination to spread awareness and bring about a plan of action.

Dr. Olinda Pereira founder principal of Roshni Nilaya and Director of Vishwas Trust was felicitated for her work in the field of Gerontology . She spoke a few words on her organization and its contribution in geriatric training. She encouraged the youth to learn, improve and imbibe knowledge and skills to work with elderly.  Dr. Rameela Shekhar, Organising Secretary of the Seminar elaborated  on  how this seminar was conceived and  she hoped that the outcome of the Seminar would be a short term course in Gerontolgy .

Dr. Amy Cotton certified Gerontological and Family Nursing Practitioner and also the Conference Chairperson gave a more formal introduction to the programme.  Later in the day during the session on The Impact of Social Gerontology: Person-Centered Care, Aging Myths and Advocacy Dr. Cottondescribed how the meaning of age impacts an individual’s ageing experience. She called on the participants torecognize common aging myths that impact delivery of person-centered health care and also to identify societal advocacy opportunities for older adults.

Dr.Elizabeth Kay Tanner, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and School of Medicine, Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology explained the importance of Interprofessional Collaboration and Exemplar Models of Care Delivery for Older Adults , in which she summarized the benefits of using an inter-professional team approach to aging care and identified the key components of the collaborative process and listed the need for exemplar models of care of older adults. She also described the role of the different members in the interdisciplinary approach of care delivery.

 

Judith S. Parnes, LCSW Executive Director Elder Life Management, New Jersey while delivering her address on The Global Aging Imperative Relevance & Impact of Gerontology Today expressed that gerontology today involves the individual, the family, the community and the country. Every nation around the world is experiencing the aging of its population. By 2020, just 6 years from now 2/3rds of the aging population will be in developing nations. Global aging has implications for all aspects of life: personally, professionally, educationally, socially, legally, ethically and financially she added.  Further she said that the social workers are trained to work with a client in person in situation.  The significance of understanding family dynamics and community resources is basic for social workers internationally. For nurses, the need to incorporate best practice methodologies with increased understanding of the social context in which the elder has to function becomes key role .  

Professor Vanessa Burholt, Director of the Centre for Innovative Ageing, at Swansea University (UK), in her presentation  titled  'Social support networks: Why practitioners should make it thier bysiness to know about family friends and neighboursstressed  on  how network typologies have been used by practitioners in the West and explore why network have been relevant to policy and practice. In particular, she described  how network types have been found to vary between communities, and is thus important in terms of determining local demands on services. Different types of network have been show to have different capacities to cope with physical and cognitive impairment in later life and some networks resist help from other sources.

 

Dr.Jacinta D’Souza provincial, south zone, Daughters of the Hearts of Mary presided for the function and addressed the gathering on Gerontology being the need of the hour.  The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Mr. Roshan Jacob, Executive Director AduantAge, Bangalore.
