SYMPHONY
The Family Cosmos Forum, Dept. of MSW in collaboration with the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and Lions Club, Mangalore organized a workshop “Symphony: An Art of Bonding” to create awareness among mothers and adolescent girls on the 27 February 2016. The workshop aimed at creating awareness on child sexual abuse and its prevention; providing a platform for mothers and their children to discuss about an issue that is not otherwise openly spoken about. It also aimed at strengthening the mother and child bonding , thereby creating a healthy support system for the children to turn to in case of any untoward events.
The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Usman A, District Child Protection Officer and the key note address was delivered by Lion Umesh Prabhu, Vice President, Lions Club, Mangalore. Both the dignitaries stressed on the need for such workshops that go beyond the classrooms and which can truly impact the lives of adolescents. The workshop was then facilitated by Dr. Rameela Shekhar, Dean, PG Dept., School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya; Ms. Manjula and Ms. Sphoorthi. Topics ranging from forms of sexual abuse: verbal, visual and physical; to the role of children as well as parents in cases of abuse were discussed and demonstrated through activities and role plays .
Students from six schools across Mangalore city along with their mothers participated in the workshop. Lioness Hema Rao and Leo Ahima Shetty from the Lions Club, Mangalore; Director of School of Social Work Dr. Philomena D’Souza and other members of the Lions club were also present.
