P.G Department of Social Work, School of social work Roshni Nilaya in association with IQAC and Zulekha Yenepoya Institute of Oncology organized an awareness programme on breast and cervical cancer on 17th February 2023 at 10:15 a.m. The venue for this programme was Maria Paiva hall.
Dr. Mohammed Guthigar, Head, Dept of social work yenopoya Medical college Hospital & deemed to be University, along with Dr. Poonam Naik Professor and Head community medicine yenopoya Medical college were the resource persons.
The session began with the prayer song. Professor Eveleen Benis Head, department of MSW addressed the gathering. Dr Mohammed Guthigar briefed the various activities conducted by the Medical unit at yenepoya Hospital, Dearallkatte. Dr Poonam Naik the resource person of the day spoke on breast and cervical cancer, its symptoms and treatment. Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Dr. Naik highlighted a few factors that lead to cancer: smoking beedi and cigarettes, chewing tobacco, bad lifestyle diet, infection, and radiation causes for the cancer. Signs and symptoms are a sore that does not heal unusual bleeding, difficulty to swallow, and cough. Further Dr. Naik continued saying that screening can be done and there are three types, self-breast examination, examination by a doctor and Mammography. She explained the procedure to be followed for the self-breast examination. The screening would be done after 40 years of age. PAP test is done for cervical cancer in married women at the age between 21 -65. To conclude, Dr. Naik spoke on the various treatments used namely cancer Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy is the treatment for cancer patients. There were a few queries from the participants. The participants for this programme were all Post graduate students. The session concluded with a vote of thanks. A total of 145 students participated in the program.
