The Department of Research and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru, organised a workshop on "Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Open Access to Conduct Scientific Research and Crafting Papers. The workshop was formally inaugurated by Dr. Rameela shekhar, Director, Manashanthi Research, Training and Counselling Centre, Mangaluru on 4th March 2025 at 10.00AM at Maria Paiva hall . The main aim of this workshop was to equip teaching faculty and research scholars with insights into leveraging AI tools and open-access resources to enhance their research efficacy and quality.

Dr. Rameela Shekhar, in her address, appreciated the initiative and reflected on the evolution of research methodologies over time. She recollected her research days, when gaining knowledge required extensive visits to universities and libraries, and contrasted it with the present scenario, where AI has made access to vast information more convenient. She highlighted how AI tools help save time and assist researchers, particularly those for who English is not a first language, by breaking language barriers.

However, she also raised an important question for contemplation whether conducting a literature review manually provides a unique sense of satisfaction, akin to deeper intellectual engagement. She emphasized the need for fact-checking AI-generated content, ensuring accuracy and reliability, and maintaining ethical responsibility in research.

AI, she noted, should be viewed as an aid rather than a replacement for human intelligence and critical thinking, which remain fundamental to becoming a good researcher. Striking a balance between human intellect and AI assistance is crucial in adding value to research.

Dr. Amitab Anand, Full Professor at Excelia Business School in La Rochelle, France, in his remarks, elaborated on the significant impact AI can have on the research landscape. He acknowledged AI as a powerful assistant that can streamline research processes but firmly asserted that it cannot replace the scientific methods that form the foundation of rigorous academic research. He emphasised the importance of understanding the right AI tools, as improper use could lead to misinformation or a lack of depth in research. He encouraged scholars to upskill themselves continuously to remain relevant in an evolving digital landscape while ensuring they do not become overly dependent on AI. Instead, he advocated for a balanced approach and making the best use of AI for efficiency while retaining human intuition, analytical thinking, and originality, which are irreplaceable in academic inquiry.

In her presidential address, Associate Professor Cecilia Goveas congratulated the organisers for organising the workshop. She emphasised the rapid advancements in technology and the necessity for researchers to stay updated, not only in producing knowledge but also in effectively sharing it. She expressed confidence that, by the end of the session, all participants and research scholars would be well-equipped with the skills needed to integrate AI into their research processes effectively.
The workshop successfully provided valuable insights into the responsible use of AI in research, encouraging scholars to harness its potential while maintaining the integrity and intellectual rigor of scientific inquiry.

Dr. Meena Monteiro, Dean P G studies, Dr. Sebastin K V, Dean Research, Dr. Saritha D Souza IQAC Co ordinator, Dr. Rosa Nimmy Mathew IQAC co coordinator were present during the occasion.
