“The purpose of psychotherapy is to set people free.” A session was conducted by Dept of Criminology on 23rd May, 2023 at 11:45 am in the Seminar Hall on the topic Psychotherapy by Dr Rosa Matthew, Asst Professor of Psychology, School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya. Three students of MSc Counseling assisted her in the session. They began with an icebreaker where students were divided into 5 groups and were asked random questions and all the students responded accordingly. The students took turns and began the session. They explained the meaning and difference between psychotherapy and counseling simultaneously. Dr Rosa took over the session and began briefing about the meaning and difference between Forensic Psychology and Correctional psychology. She described the goals of psychotherapy in detail which includes post release source of livelihood, combat of social stigma, counseling services, and post release follow up. She also talked about two types of criminals, “Criminogenic and Non criminogenic”. She further spoke about characteristics of an effective intervention which includes, risk, needs, responsibility, professional discretion and integrity. She taught about cognitive behavioral therapy, under which she spoke about distorted cognition, cognitive restructuring and victim stance. The session ended by 12:45 with clearing of doubts by Dr Rosa Matthew. 56 students participated in this session.
