As a part of memorandum of understanding between the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya Mangaluru and Fr. Mullers Medical College 28 Final year students of Criminology and Forensic Science visited the Psychiatric Ward of Fr. Muller's Hospital in Kankanady, Mangaluru on February 24th 2024, at 2:30 pm, accompanied by Mr. Joel Joseph, Assistant Professor.
Upon arrival, the students were welcomed to the Nurse’s room, where they received a briefing from the Head Nurse, Ms. Bindhu, regarding the institution's handled cases and treatment services offered.
The Psychiatric Ward was divided into two sections: the Family Unit Ward, which caters to patients requiring family support alongside institutional interventions, and the General Unit Ward, which accommodates patients receiving treatment independently. Within the General Ward, there was a separate division for female patients.
The Psychiatric Ward provides treatment for various conditions such as severe manic disorders, substance use disorders, serious mental illnesses, and suicidal tendencies, utilizing medications and therapies. Additionally, recreational activities such as board games and badminton are offered, along with nutritious meals served in a separate dining hall.
The Ward is staffed with psychologists, psychiatrists, interns, and nurses who attend to the patients' emotional and mental health needs daily.
During the visit, students interacted with patients exhibiting different forms of mental illnesses, gaining practical insights into their conditions and treatment approaches. They also received education on the legal norms governing the treatment of patients with psychological illnesses in India and were introduced to the use of ECG machines for severe conditions.
Overall, the visit proved to be enlightening for the students, offering them a first-hand experience and understanding of the psychiatric field.
