On April 29, 2024, 15 BA students visited a BDS facility in Goa to gain deeper insights into their operational procedures, equipment, and protocols for handling explosive devices. This report encapsulates key observations and findings from the visit, highlighting the crucial role played by the BDS in enhancing public safety.
The BDS is a highly trained and specialized unit within law enforcement, established to combat the threat of explosive devices. BDS personnel undergo rigorous training and utilize advanced equipment to detect, render safe, and dispose of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other hazardous materials. Their mandate is to safeguard civilian populations and critical infrastructure, operating on the front lines of counter-terrorism and public safety efforts.
During the visit, students observed an array of equipment and tools used by the squad, crucial for executing bomb detection, rendering safe procedures (RSP), and disposal tasks efficiently and safely, which included:
Remote Controlled Wire Cutter: Allows the squad to remotely sever wires connected to explosive devices, minimizing personnel risk.
Thermal Cutter: Used to cut through IEDs rigged with timers or concealed within materials, ensuring safe dismantling.
Non-linear Junction Detector: Detects electronic components within concealed devices, aiding in identification and neutralization.
Trolley Mirror Extension Mirror: Facilitates inspections of hard-to-reach areas, such as vehicle undersides, enhancing threat detection.
Prowders (Metal and Non-metal): Identifies and marks explosive materials during detection and disposal operations.
Hand-Held Metal Detector (HHD): Scans individuals, objects, or surfaces for metallic components indicative of explosive devices.
Real-Time Viewing Machine: Provides real-time monitoring of suspicious objects from a safe distance, offering crucial visual feedback.
Laptop: Versatile tool for data access, analysis, remote research, and facilitating communication and coordination.
MO8 Explosive Detector: Detects trace amounts of explosive materials, aiding in threat identification.
Bulletproof Vest: Essential protective gear for squad members, mitigating the risk of injury from explosions or shrapnel.
The visit provided invaluable insights into the specialized equipment, tools, and procedures employed by BDS personnel. The criminology department acknowledges the dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment of BDS personnel to safeguarding public safety. Continued investment in training, equipment upgrades, and inter-agency collaboration is imperative to enhance the effectiveness and safety of bomb detection and disposal operations, thereby ensuring the protection of civilian populations and critical infrastructure from explosive threats.
The visit was highly beneficial and enriching for the students, offering a comprehensive understanding of bomb detection and disposal efforts.
Moreover, highlighting the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, four students from the M.Sc. Forensic Science program at KMC Manipal participated in the excursion through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between KMC Manipal and the School of Social Work. Their involvement enhanced the exchange of knowledge and skills, promoting a comprehensive learning atmosphere.
