On April 29, 2024, a group of fifteen students from III BA embarked on an enlightening journey to the Cyber Crime Police Station in Goa. Their visit aimed to deepen their understanding of the intricate workings of cybercrime investigation and prevention.
Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed and ushered into a realm were digital vigilance reigns supreme. Led by the station's Sub-Inspector, they delved into the core responsibilities of the station, which primarily revolve around unraveling cyber fraud, tracking elusive suspects, and scrutinizing vast troves of digital data.
In an illuminating session, the Sub-Inspector elucidated the station's modus operandi. With meticulous precision, officers monitor financial transactions conducted through digital platforms, employing an arsenal of sophisticated software tools such as Oxygen Detective Suite, UFED, Magnet AXIOM, and Write Blocker. Furthermore, the students were introduced to cybercrime.gov.in, a portal designed to foster public engagement by offering resources ranging from a Citizen Manual for reporting cybercrimes to Cyber Safety Tips and Cyber Awareness initiatives.
The Sub-Inspector shared a riveting case study, showcasing the station's adeptness in tackling complex online fraud schemes. Detailing a saga of counterfeit websites and fraudulent social media profiles, he underscored the unit's relentless pursuit of justice, which entailed meticulous digital forensics, financial trail analysis, and collaborative efforts with allied law enforcement agencies.
Highlighting the pivotal role of cybercrime units in safeguarding citizens from the perils of the digital realm, the Sub-Inspector emphasized the importance of technological prowess in combating cyber threats. The students departed with newfound insights into emerging cybercrime trends and equipped with knowledge to navigate the digital landscape safely.
Students also had the chance to meet with the Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime, leading to a productive discussion.
Moreover, as part of an ongoing memorandum of understanding (MOU) between KMC Manipal and the School of Social Work, four students from M.Sc. Forensic Science at KMC Manipal joined the excursion, enriching the interdisciplinary exchange of insights and expertise.
