As part of a study tour, the Department of Criminology organized a visit to the Anti Narcotic Cell (ANC) Police Station in Panjim, Goa, for 15 final-year BA students on Monday, April 29th, 2024.

During the visit, the Sub-Inspector (S.I) provided an overview of the ANC, explaining that it is a specialized unit within the police department focused on combating drug-related crimes and trafficking. The ANC undertakes various activities such as undercover operations, raids, and investigations to apprehend individuals involved in drug offenses. They collaborate closely with other law enforcement agencies to address the narcotics issue in the region. The process of handling a case begins with the ANC receiving information about potential drug-related activities from various sources. Subsequently, ANC officers may conduct surveillance on suspects and gather evidence through informants, electronic surveillance, and other methods. They may also conduct undercover operations to gather evidence or make controlled drug purchases from suspects. Once sufficient evidence is collected, the ANC may obtain search warrants and conduct raids on suspected drug locations. They then work with prosecutors to prepare the case for trial by providing evidence, witness statements, and other documentation. Finally, the case is presented in court, where both the prosecution and defense present their arguments and evidence. If the accused is found guilty, they may face penalties such as fines, imprisonment, or rehabilitation programs. Additionally, the ANC uses drug detection kits to test substances for the presence of drugs such as LSD, Ganja, Cocaine, and MDMA. It was also mentioned that chemical and saliva tests can detect drug use up to three days, for instance in urine tests.

The visit highlighted the ANC's unwavering commitment to tackling drug-related crimes, emphasizing the need for ongoing vigilance and collaboration to create a drug-free community.

As part of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between KMC Manipal and the School of Social Work, four students from the M.Sc. Forensic Science program at KMC Manipal joined the excursion, enriching the interdisciplinary exchange of insights and expertise.
