On the 26th of September 2018, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya Departments of languages English, Kannada and Hindi in collaboration with Kannada and Samskruthi Ilakkey, Dakshina Kannada, Jilla, Mangalore inaugurated Rangasangama - an orientation of Rangasagara, Theatre, Film Appreciation Certificate Programme of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya where the students of Besant College, Mangalore and the students of Gokarnatheshwara College showcased two plays Veera Mathey and Kauravana Garva Bangha.
The Inaugural Programme began with a Welcome Speech by the Head of the Department of Kannada Mr. Obanath, followed by the Introduction of Rangasagara by Ms. Shobhana Manohar, Head of the Department of English.
The inauguration was done symbolically with the beating of Drums by the Registrar, Dr.Laxminarayan Bhat. He spoke about the importance of Art, Culture, Drama, dance and Music in our lives as it was a form of sublime happiness.
Dr. Shivaram Shetty, Chief Guest, Director of Namma Kudla, Mangalore appreciated the College for providing space for art and culture alongside curriculur activities. He stated that focusing on Art Forms develops a personality and lets one express oneself.
Ms.Juliet C.J. , the Principal of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, delivered the Presidential Address and spoke about the importance and history of theatre in the lives of people.
The Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr. Keshav Gowda U., Head of the Department of Hindi.
Eminent guests such as Shri Balakrishna Hegde, Kannada Samskriti Ilakkey, Prof.Krishnanand Hegde, Dr. Shivasharan Shetty,Mr. Raviraj and Mr. Suresh Varkadi were part of the Inaugural Programme.
'Veera Mathey' a historical play portraying the fight for Ullal under the seige of the Portuguese and the adventure and sacrifice of Kutappa, a brave soldier in Rani Abakka's Army was showcased by the students of Besant College. This was followed by the showcasing of another play 'Kauravana Garva Bangha' which portrayed the character of Kaurava, from the Mahabharata and the destruction of his ego.
