The Indian Red Cross Society, D.K. District Branch, in collaboration with the Youth Red Cross, Mangalore University, the Youth Red Cross, and the IQAC of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore, celebrated World Geneva Convention Day on August 12, 2024, at 10:30 AM in the College Auditorium, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore.
The event began with an inauguration ceremony, including the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries present on the dais. The programme featured esteemed guests such as Brigadier I.N. Rai (Veteran), Kishorechandra Hegde, Secretary of IRCS DK District, Mr. Mohan Shetty, Treasurer, IRCS, D K District and Dr. Gayathri N, YRC Nodal Officer, Mangalore University. Dr. Sumana Bolar, Head of the Sociology Department at Government First Grade College for Women, Mangalore, served as the resource person, along with Asst. Prof. Anusuya Kamath, YRC Program Officer, Dr. Saritha D’Souza, IQAC Coordinator.
The programme commenced with a prayer song performed by YRC volunteers, followed by a welcome speech by Asst. Prof. Anusuya Kamath. Mr. Kishorechandra Hegde encouraged the students to understand the history of the Youth Red Cross and embrace their role as volunteers dedicated to service.
Ms. Priya Veronica D’Souza, a second-year BSW student, who introduced Dr. Sumana Bolar, the Resource Person to the audience. She explained on the history of the Geneva Conventions and engaged students in a discussion on the principles of the Youth Red Cross, which include Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.
Brigadier I.N. Rai shared his experiences in the Indian Army, inspiring students to use mass media for positive purposes, especially in spreading knowledge about the Youth Red Cross and promoting humanitarian service.
Dr. Saritha D’Souza, the IQAC Coordinator, expressed gratitude on behalf of the organizing team, and the programme concluded with the National Anthem. The event was meticulously organized under the guidance of the Managing Committee Members of IRCS DK District. Ms. Sara Nihaf, a first-year B.Com YRC volunteer, served as the Master of Ceremony. A Total of 61 YRC Volunteers participated in this programme.
