The Workshop was organised by Mr. Srikant, Asst Prof. Anuradha Shetty and Kishore Attavar on the 22nd of February 2020
The extension service dept of Roshni has been working with Ullal City Municipal Council on Waste Management Programme since 2016-17. During January to April 2020, the field work, PG and UG social work Students have trained 10,000 Primary and High School students of 42 Educational Institutes of Ullal in segregation of waste at source for a sustainable Waste Management practice. Since then, training our own students to sensitise on ‘zero waste management’ process to practice the concept in our campus was long due. Hence, a workshop in partnership with student’s council of Roshni Nilaya was felt appropriate from the point of follow-up action on 22nd February 2020.
The objectives were:
• To train UG and PG students of Social work on segregation of waste at source
• To motivate students to practice segregation of waste in college campus and at their homes.
The Methodology followed :
• A total of 100 UG students were covered in the workshop and were sensitised in five groups i.e,; 1) 1st BA,2) BSW 3) 2nd BA, 4) BSW and 5) 3rd BA
• Workshops conducted in their respective class rooms and further divide them in groups of 25/30 and facilitators assigned , class wise
• Activity based exercise of 45 minutes by MSW student s as facilitators who are trained in sensitising 10K primary and high school students segregation of waste in Ullal and supported by MSW students as assistant facilitators.
Concepts of bio degradable and non –bio degradable waste dealt in interactive session.
Discussion on the concept of Reduce, Reuse, Refuse and Recycle for sustainable waste clarified.
Class representatives and student council members involved in preparatory work to prepare waste sample kit prior to the workshop.
Tools :
Waste sample kits prepared by respective UG class representatives with 25 waste samples for classification of a) wet, b) dry and c) hazardous wastes. Details of the preparatory work and guidelines prior to the workshop were given in the annexure-1 for reference.
Workshop Process :
The programme was co-ordinated by Mr. Kishore Attavar, Director of Extension service and Assistant Professor Anuradha Shetty after matching and batching of facilitators with class reps as well as in finalising the waste sample kit. The workshop process started at 10.30 am.The new class representatives facilitators and their assistants were given induction on the waste sample kits and expected outcomes and documentation at 10.30 am.
Workshops for BSW (1st and 2nd Year) were conducted in thier class rooms in MSW block while for the BA students, it was held in the administrative block in class room 2,3 and 4 up to 11.30 am.
The co-ordinator and Asst co-ordinator visited each class rooms during workshop and provided additional inputs and clarifications for student’s queries. The workshop was concluded by 11.45am. This was followed by a feedback session by facilitators and assistants.
Findings and students’ suggestions :
- Students are aware of the need for segregation of waste. However, there were misconceptions about concept of ‘dry waste’ and ‘wet waste’ vis-a-viz bio degradable and non bio degradable wastes.
- Students are aware of catastrophe of land fill site at Pachanady
- There were queries about classification of wastes such as; lithium, silicon, carbon fibre and chewing gums disposal of old shoes and chappals, glass bottles and human Hair?
- ‘Clean camps day can be held on every Saturday and attractive IEC methods could be used to attract youth such as; flash mob, loud music etc could be very effective’.
- “Provide two separate bins to segregate dry and wet waste in our canteen. We follow this system in the hostel’
Feedback from Facilitators :
- Arrange field visit to waste processing site of MCC at Vamanjoor to sensitize students.
- Showing videos of plastic shredding would have been effective
- Suggestions for follow-up action
- Follow-up meeting with student council representatives for practicing segregation of waste at Campus and Homes.
- Student welfare officer and management representatives. sustainable waste management in the campus will require co-ordination with
