Ms. Sarik Ankitha, HOD, UG Department of Criminology, conducted an interactive lecture on Cybercrime Awareness on November 22, 2024, at CODP, Mangaluru. The session was attended by 50 participants, who were representatives of various non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
During the lecture, Ms. Ankitha provided in-depth insights into the evolving landscape of cybercrime, highlighting the latest threats, tactics used by cybercriminals and the impact of cyber offenses on individuals and organizations.
She discussed various types of cybercrimes, including phishing, loan app scams, sextortion, digital arrests, and AI-driven cybercrimes such as advanced vishing scams and automated attacks. Additionally, she covered romance scams, investment fraud, cyber grooming, identity theft, cyberstalking, OTP scams, camera hacking, dating website fraud, and online drug trafficking.
Ms. Ankitha also explained effective strategies for preventing these cyber threats and ensuring online safety. She highlighted key preventive measures such as securing personal data, recognizing fraudulent schemes, safeguarding digital identities, and utilizing cybersecurity tools to protect against malicious activities.
The session was highly interactive, allowing participants to share experiences, ask questions, and engage in discussions on real-life cybercrime cases. Ms. Ankitha also guided them on digital safety practices and available legal resources for reporting and addressing cybercrimes.
The event aimed to empower NGO representatives with the knowledge and tools needed to raise cyber awareness within their communities, ensuring a collective effort in promoting cyber safety and digital responsibility.
