Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could definitely change the world for one person. And to learn and enhance these skills of counselling, a National Level Skill Development Programme on Counselling Skills was organised by Short term Special Courses, in association with IQAC and Department of Counselling, at School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru on 25th October 2021. In the programme 29 students of PGDC participated. The programme began with seeking God’s blessings. Sr. Lilly Braggs and Sr. Premitha, students of PGDC programme led the group into prayer.
Ms. Rosa Nimmy Mathew, HOD of the Department of Counselling delivered the key note address. Being the resource person of the workshop, she enlightened the delegates on the importance and role of counsellors in the present days. Thereafter, the respectful dignitaries on the diase Ms. Ratna Pinto - Chief Guest, Ms. Eveleen Benis – Course Director, Short Term Special Courses, School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, Ms. Veeda Sequeira – President, Institute of Social Service, Ms. Cecelia Goveas – IQAC Coordinator, School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, Ms. Rosa N Mathew – HOD, Department of Counselling, Dr. Jacintha Dsouza – Director, Family Service Agency & Family Counselling Centre, Institute of Social Service, inaugurated the session by watering the saplings. They wished the delegates may grow in the counselling profession.
The esteemed chief guest of the day, Ms. Ratna Pinto, a life skill trainer, addressed the gathering. She illustrated the dos and don’ts in counselling based on her career experiences. She also explained different counselling skills and how to acquire them by actively practicing them in everyday life. Ms. Ratna said when we help the clients to solve the problems with the acquired counselling skills, is when we become successful counsellors.
Ms. Cecelia Goveas, IQAC coordinator, School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, mentioned the need of counselling and that it should be treated normal and soon reach free of taboo. Ms. Veeda Sequeira, President, Institute of Social Service, shared her experience as a psychologist and wished all the delegates good learning experience in the workshop. Former Principal Dr. Jacintha Dsouza, who is now heading Family Service Agency and Family Counselling Centre, Institute of Social Service, gave brief information about the centre.
Ms. Eveleen Benis, Course Co-ordinator, Short Term Courses, School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya, proposed vote of thanks. The resource person Ms. Rosa N Mathew, HOD Department of Counselling, began with the workshop. She elaborated on various counselling skills and asked the delegates to form dyads and practice counselling skills. The delegates had good exposure and hands on experience in practicing counselling skills. The workshop ended at 04:00 pm with fruitful learning experience.
