SESSIONS ON PERSONALITY DISORDER AND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY BY THE FIELD EXPERT
The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Mangaluru organized sessions on “Personality Disorder” and “Intellectual Disability” for the second-year MSc CFS students of Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice specialization on 26th and 29th October 2021. The resource person was Prof. Mamatha Bhandary, Mental Health Professional, K.S Hegde Medical Academy, Nitte University (deemed to be) Deralakatte, Mangaluru.
The session began with a presentation about meaning of personality, characteristics of personality disorder and its etiology. She discussed the classification of personality disorder with various examples and experiences. Further, explanation is provided about the treatment for Personality Disorders, competency, criminal responsibility, NGRI and use of insanity in legal system.
In the session of “Intellectual Disability” she spoke about the concept of intellectual disability, DSM – V, historical development, case study on Down Syndrome, ICD, Subnormal intellectual functioning and etiology. Further, interaction session was held on Forensic Psychology, its historical development, difference between Forensic Psychologist and Forensic Psychiatrist, subfields of Forensic Psychology, Forensic Clinical Psychology, its application in court and expert witness. The session was ended with the brief note on field based case studies on Insanity Vs. Competence, Crime Scene Investigation and Forensic Report Writing. Altogether, 8 students of the specialization were involved in the discussion.
