Disaster Risk Reduction 2015
National symposium on disaster Risk Reduction 2015 organized by School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya and Center for Health and Development on July 15, 2015 from 10:00 am to 03:30 pm. 162 students from various colleges were participated in this programme. The symposium was inaugurated by Dakshina kannada D C Mr. Ibrahim A.Dr.Edmond Fernandes, medico social activist and CEO, centre for health and development, welcomed the gathering. Mr. Ibrahim spoke on the lack of accountability at the time of disasters and the subsequent delays in managing the same. The guests of honor for the inaugural were Mr. Sharanappa, Superintendent of Police; Mr. Ashok, Asst. Commissioner and Mr. Abhay Nirgude, Professsor, Dept. of Community Medicine, Yenepoya University. They addressed issues such as the need for citizens to come together in reducing disasters and spreading awareness about the same.
The symposium consisted of four sessions. The first session by Dr. Saurabh Dalal, consultant at National Institute of Disaster Management, ministry of Home Affairs, Govt of India was on psycho social care that is to be given after a disaster hits. Mr. Ramachandra Kamath, Professor in the Dept. of public health, Manipal University spoke about emergency medical relief that has to delivered to the disaster victims and the difficulties faced in doing the same because of lack of public awareness. The third session was on people's role in disasters and the negative consequences of lack people's cooperation in disaster mitigation by Dr. Shivaprasad, Ex. Commandant, Home Guards, Govt. of Karnataka. The concluding session by AC Mr. Ashok gave an understanding of the DMA Act and the provisions there
Dr. Sophia Fernandes, principal of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Dr. Rameela shekhar, Dean of P.G department and Dr. Meena Monteiro were present for this programme. The symposium ended with the formation of a disaster response cell.
