The college opted for the biogas plant because it serves the dual purpose of processing the waste and providing cooking gas for the college canteen. A biogas plant was installed in the college in 2012 under the CPE grant and maintained by the Institute of Social Service. The major components of the biogas plant are a digester tank, an inlet for feeding the kitchen waste, a gas holder tank, an outlet for the digested slurry and a gas delivery system for taking out and utilizing the produced gas.
The Institute utilizes all kitchen and food waste for the generation of biogas on the college campus. Biodegradable waste from the college canteen, hostel mess, and other sources are used to generate thermal energy for cooking and heating. The facility processes about 30 kgs of kitchen waste every day – mainly the contents of organic waste from hostel mess and college canteen as leftover food and expired food.
