On March 22, 2025, the Postgraduate Department of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, in collaboration with the Internal Academic Quality Cell (IAQC) of the School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya (Autonomous), Mangalore, organized a special session to understand the role of social work in empowering tribal communities. The lecture was held in the Seminar Hall from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as part of the commemoration of Social Work Day. The session aimed to promote awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by tribal communities in Tanzania and the role of social work in their empowerment.

The session commenced with a warm welcome extended to the resource person, Sister Maria Anitha Florine, Director of UFS, Assisi Social Action Centre, Same, Tanzania. Dr. Umme Hani, Assistant Professor in the MSW Department, welcomed Sister Maria by presenting a plant as a token of appreciation for her valued presence.

During the session, Sister Maria Anitha Florine shared her extensive experience working with the Pare tribe in Tanzania. She provided an insightful depiction of the Pare tribe’s culture and highlighted both the successes and challenges encountered in empowering these communities. Key areas of discussion included the importance of education, challenges faced by tribal women, nutritional deficiencies, midday meal programs, and healthcare concerns among tribal women. Additionally, she elaborated on the eating habits of the tribes and their rich cultural heritage in Tanzania.

The session was highly interactive, allowing students and faculty members to gain a deeper understanding of the social work interventions necessary for the upliftment of tribal communities.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Assistant Professor Angelin Rachel Thangam, expressing gratitude to the resource person, faculty members, and students for their active participation.

The session was both enlightening and inspiring, reinforcing the significant role of social work in fostering positive change among marginalized tribal communities.
