In keeping with the theme of World Mental Health Day 2024, ‘It is time to prioritize mental health in the workplace’, the Psy Forum, Holistic Well-being Forum, and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell jointly organized the event for all employees of the college on Thursday, 10th October 2024 in the auditorium. Forty-four members, including teaching, administrative and ministerial staff, attended the event showing strong support for the day’s theme.
The event began with a relaxation session where participants were encouraged to take a moment, creating a peaceful atmosphere before the program continued. Each participant chose a badge with a thoughtful mental health slogan, serving as a symbolic reminder of the day’s message—prioritizing mental wellness. Each employee put their chosen badge for another which was worn throughout the program, reinforcing the latent message of supporting and spreading awareness about mental health.
A brief physical activity got all employees feeling energized and enthusiastic. A 3-minute video titled ‘Prime Time’ prepared by the UG students of Psychology was screened which focused on a decision to unwind, reconnect, delegate and resolve with the message being “You are your only Prime Time” resounding the day’s theme. It focussed on how employees could improve their mental health individually and collectively. The video would be uploaded on the College Youtube channel soon.
The interactive part of the program involved an engaging activity centered around self-care, mindfulness, positive affirmations, and gratitude. Attendees wrote down personal messages reflecting these themes and placed them in slots on the Roshni Wellness Wall. It was informed that the display would later be kept near the biometrics area, where all employees could pick up chits and read them as daily reminders and practice these strategies regularly.
All employees enthusiastically engaged in a warm-up exercise to practice the oft-repeated quote, “You’re only one workout away from a good mood”. The organizers mentioned brief booster breaks that would be introduced every day at 11:30 am and 3:30 pm in the auditorium for all for the next 21 days imbibing the 21/90 rule that it takes 21 days to develop a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle change. The focus of the organizers was to get all employees energized with booster breaks and focus on self-care leading towards enhanced mental hygiene.
The programme from 9:15 am to 10 am well compered both in English and Kannada by PG students of Counselling namely Preethi and Thushara left a lasting impact, offering a refreshing and practical approach to workplace mental health. It provided participants with not only awareness but also tools to integrate mental wellness into their daily routines. The blend of relaxation, educational content, and interactive activities made the World Mental Health Day celebration a meaningful and positive experience for everyone involved.
