Faculty Development Programme on Research and Counselling Skills for Teachers

(7th March 2022):
Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on Research Skills for Teachers organized by Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru in association with Rajiv Gandhi National Institute for youth development, Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu was conducted online via google meet platform from 7th to 9th march 2022.
Dr. Juliet C J, the Principal, School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya Mangaluru, addressed the gathering by highlighting the key features of the importance of the programme.
The first session was begun with the prayer led by Mr. Lamees Nasim, student of SSW, Roshni Nilaya. The Resource person, Dr. Rameela Shekhar, Director and Practitioner of Mental Health Professional at Manashanthi and former Head of the Department of MSW at Roshni Nilaya conducted the session on “Role of Teachers”. She spoke about the importance of wellbeing and mental health of the students. She highlighted on the problems that students face mentally and challenges they are burdened with the present scenario of the world.
In the afternoon session, Dr. Rameela Shekhar spoke about “Teachers Role in Enhancing the Mental Health of Students”. She expressed her views about how teachers can help the students in building their self-esteem and bring their self-awareness in the various situations. She highlighted the role of teachers in strengthening the mental health of the students.
Ms. Bindiya T, Assistant professor, PG Department of Criminology and Forensic Science compered the event for the day. The session ended with a Vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Joel Joseph, Assistant professor, PG Department of Criminology and Forensic Science.
(8th March 2022):
Day Two- The webinar on “Curriculum Development and Design” was conducted on the second day of FDP. Both sessions were conducted by the resource person Ms. Ordetta Hanna Mendoza, Former Head, Dept. of Bioinformatics, Stella Maris College, (Autonomous), Chennai and coordinator of Programmes, Xavier Board of Higher Education. She started the session with explaining about the curriculum and syllabi. She explained the importance of curriculum feedback and how we need to look at the future while preparing the curriculum. She explained the curriculum design process and the content of curriculum documentation. The basic core curriculum design features were explained. She explained the reason that why students should be provided opportunities to learn through extra curriculum activities. The curriculum should follow the organization goal. She described the designing the curriculum models in various ways such as – subject entered curriculum, learner centered curriculum, integrated curriculum etc. She also stressed about all the factors which influence the curriculum design. She mentioned about the core curriculum and core curriculum design that should help students to move to a higher level. During the afternoon session Ms. Ordetta Hanna Mendoza explained how to develop the curriculum that we design. She stressed the necessity to have Curriculum Design Cell. The institute should plan the semester and courses as per University guidelines keeping in mind the flow of the learning. There should be a committee for the curriculum design consisting one teacher and other stakeholders who are actually interested in the college. The representatives from admin staff, stakeholder and parents should involve for the curriculum designing.
Ms. Anuradha Shetty, Assistant professor, Department of Rural Development compered the event for the day. The session ended with a Vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Jennifer Carlo, Assistant professor, Department of Counseling.
(9th March 2022):
Day Three- The resource person for the morning session was Dr.Thomas Scaria Director, Ecolink Institute & Director, ARCO (Addiction Recovery Coach Online) India. He conducted the session on “Identifying and Managing Substance abuse in campuses: The need for Research”. In his session, he informed that Juvenile case registered under NDPS Act rose from 21% to 264% in 2020 due to pandemic. He explained about the major effects among the young generation during the pandemic and the need of the drug. He stressed about the origin of drugs, drug use, and drug abuse and drug addiction. He explained about commonly abused substances like tobacco, heroine cocaine etc.
The ways in which persons get addicted to drugs and how to identify various kinds drug addiction in the campus among students. The skills and techniques that required for a teacher to prevent drug addiction and counsel them accordingly.
He enlightened how teachers can facilitate the drug abuse topics among research students.
The afternoon session was conducted by Mr. Jobin John, Managing Director –Fortuwest International, Mangalore on the topic “Skills and Techniques for Academic Linkages –the need for Research”. He spoke about the awareness on career counseling for the students who are seeking admission in abroad. He highlighted the need for linkages with foreign universities. He explained in detail about the process of placement in western countries such as IELTS exam also about the awareness for visa processing that takes place for educational purpose and the required documents for the same. He shared his knowledge about education in abroad and required guidance among the faculty.
Ms. Roshini Monica Goveas, Assistant professor, Department of Psychology compered the event for the day. The session ended with a Vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Cecilia F. Goveas, Associate professor and IQAC Coordinator.
The programme was fruitful for all the participants.
