Session on Rehabilitation Counselling
A session on Rehabilitation Counselling was organised by the department of M.Sc. Counselling on September 20th, 2016. Fr. Prince, faculty of MSW, School Of Social Work was the resource person.
The sessions was a participative learning experience exploring the history of rehabilitation counselling and rehabilitation process in India . The facilitator also explained the different models of rehabilitation centres with a case report.
Orientation on Community Development techniques, strategies, skills
1.Orientation to Psychiatry:
Orientation to psychiatry workshop was held by Ms. Prateeksha Shetty, a clinical psychology lecturer on 11th July, 2017. She dealt with psychiatric illness, types and symptoms which are related to psychiatric illness. There were practical session along with the theory, which helped us in identifying the illnesses and how to deal with the client.
2. Aggressive management of college students:
Aggressive management of college students workshop by Ms. Sandra Lobo, professor of school of social work Roshini Nilaya on 13th July 2017. She spoke about causes and conflict resolution model. She conducted group activities and role play. Trainees learnt to how to cope up with aggressive behaviour.
3. Counselling skills:
Counselling skills workshop by Ms. Spoorthi and Ms. Rameelashekhar, dean and student welfare officer of PG Department of school of social work Roshini Nilaya on 13th and 14th July 2017. They dealt with counselling skills such as rapport building, listening, observing, questioning, reframing etc followed by demonstration.
Story telling in counselling
Two day workshop on Story Telling in Counselling was organised by the M.Sc. Counselling department on 25th and 26th August 2016.
Father Kuriakose described the different methodologies used in story telling like mutual storytelling, retelling the story, life line technique, metaphors, anecdotal records and real life stories. 55 participants benefitted from the workshop.
Sleep disorders and management
Session on Sleep
School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya in collaboration with Indian Institute of Material Management ( Mangalore branch) and National Institute of Personnel Management ( Mangalore chapter) organised a session on " Sleep disorders &Management" by Dr. C.R Chandrashekar, Former Senior Professor of Psychiatry, NIMHANS, Bangalore on 18th September 2016 at 4:00pm in Roshni Nilaya , Mangaluru.
Mr P Suresh, Chairman NIPM welcomed the Dignitaries , Dr Rameela Shekhar, Dean P G Dept , introduced the speaker . The session began with a quiz to the participants which was later discussed by Dr. C.R Chandrashekar and this clarified many of the myths attached to sleep and dreams . He further explained that 1/3rd of our lives is spent in sleeping and our dreams are helpful and dreaming is good for one’s mental health. Sleep helps in secreting growth hormones and relaxing both body and mind. Dr C R Chandrashekar , spoke on the effects of sleep deprivation which are fatigue, pain, discomfort, decrease in concentration, decrease in memory and if the person continues the same for more than 1 week they tend to develop mental health problems . He also discussed in his talk, the factors which disturb sleep, problems during sleep , and sleep problems and their treatment.
He concluded by saying there is nothing as good dreams and bad dreams, dream's help in ventilation of emotions and relaxation. The session ended with discussion and clarification of doubts. More than 90 participants which Included Psychiatrists, mental health professionals, engineers, personnel managers , teachers and students attended the session.
Healing the Inner Child, Mind Blocks, Relationship Counselling, Eclectic Therapy and Parapsychology
Inner Child, Relationship Counselling, Eclectic Therapy
Training programme was organised by the department of M.Sc. Counselling to Anugraha Counselling and Training Centre, Dindigul. Tamil Nadu from 4th- to 10th March, 2017. From counselling 26 students, 2 staff and 3 students of PGDC joined us in the quest for knowledge and healing. The session on healing the Inner Child, Mind Blocks, Relationship Counselling, Eclectic Therapy and Parapsychology was conducted by Fr. Sunder Wilson, Director, Anugraha Counselling Centre. On 4th of March day was spent on rapport building activities.
On day one 5/03/2017 Fr. Wilson began with a vibrating action song and moved on to explain about the concept of Inner child, baby genius, dummy parent, imprinting, inner pilot and also importance of mothers touch to build immunity in the child.
On the second day, the first session focused on the importance of probiotics, alkalizing food, processed food, and natural remedies for cleansing and energising the digestive system. The second session highlighted the lack of nurturing which leads to dependency and codependency. Interventions such as interacting with nature, inner child dialogue, healing the deepest wound would help in developing a healthy personality. Next session gave an insight on how protection and reassurance helps in building trust. This was followed by 3 trust building exercises in dyads, triads and rounds; each of the students was involved in the activities to come out of fear and mistrust. The last session Fr. Wilson explored the 27 body movement and how creative body movements help in releasing negative emotions. The day concluded with a long walk through the village and fun time in the evening with games and quiz.
Day Three the session began with an action song. The focus of the session was releasing the primal pain. Different forms of dance like, Jumbo, Bangra, and belly dance were introduced as a therapeutic tool for releasing negative emotions. In the following session, the facilitator explained the subliminal perception, reprogramming the inner child and filling the love tank.
Day 4, the main objective of the session was dealing with guilt and shame. Some of the key points discussed were, catharsis through quantum expression and not continuum, childhood development of shame and guilt through parental injunction and negative life themes. The session 2 and 3, focused on attending skills and eclectic approach to counselling. The last session roused the curiosity of the students with the stages in Romantic life. The concept like scanning, choosing the life partner and process in a romantic relationship was addressed.
On day 5 Fr. Wilson introduced the area of Parapsychology. The students were made aware of devils, Psychological and elemental possession. The students were introduced to the idea of Aura and some were trained to identify the level of Aura. This was followed by practicing aura enhancing exercises. In session 2 the facilitator explained the different mind blocks and how learned helplessness, a barrier to let go of mind blocks. This was followed by personality self- assessment through drawing and handwriting analysis. The last evening session highlighted the types of couple dyads and love languages. This was followed by feedback and thanking the facilitator for his fantabulous inputs and participatory training.

Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) Workshop 2017
Workshop on “Participatory Rural Appraisal” (PRA) was conducted for Twenty Nine final year B.S.W. students by Dr. Madhumala, HOD B.S.W. Department, Alva’s College, Moodabidri on 31st March, 2017 at Seminar Hall, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya. During the workshop students understood the purpose and objectives of PRA to be organised in the community as the trainer demonstrated various methods of PRA like Transact Walk, Resource Mapping, Venn Diagram, Social Mapping in the college campus. Group activities were also conducted for the students. There were also interactive sessions between students and faculty.

Thematic presentation on DEPRESSION “LET'S UNDERSTAND IT BETTER" was conducted in seminar hall on 8th August 2017 at 3.30pm by 2nd Medical and Psychiatric Social Work students. This program went on as per the following agenda, at first student of 2nd MPSW performed a role play, and followed by power point presentation. The presentation explained about how depression is different from sadness, meaning, causes and symptoms like lack of sleep, poor appetite, decreased interest in favourite activities, significant weight loss or gain, fatigue or loss of energy and also about the diagnosis. Mental health interventions like psycho education, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, inter personal therapy etc were discussed. Program ended with the video of cine star Deepika Padukone as an ambassador for depression.
WORKSHOP ON MEDIA AND HEALTH
Workshop on media and health by Mr.Vishal Nayak, Assistant Professor and former Head of the PG department of Mass Communication and Journalism at St. Aloysius college, Mangaluru on 19th july,2017.
Mr.Vishal Nayak dealt with the topic such as what is media, types of media, phenomena about advertisement and followed by an activity in which trainees learnt how Medical and Psychiatric Social workers can create an advertisement based on three aspects that is, paid, owned and earned.
Workshop on "BIOPSYCHOSOCIAL ASPECTS OF BEHAVIOUR with focus on Neuroscience and Social Work" on 29th November,2017 by Dr.Priya Treesa Thomas,Assistant Professor,Department of Psychiatric of Social Work , NIMHANS, Bengaluru. She dealt with biological, psychological and Social aspects of Behaviour.She also dealt with functioning of the brain and its relationship to Behaviour . She stressed on the aspect of the need for a Psychiatric Social Work to understand this concept ..Dr. Priya illustrated the concept with Cases and she also answered the queries posed by the students.
Workshop on 'FAMILY THERAPY' on 30th November,2017 by dr taniya from nimhans,bangaluru. She dealt with difference between counseling and psycho therapy,also explained the process of family therapy with the help of video. This workshop helped the scholars to understand how to conduct family therapy in hospitals.
Thematic presentation of 'DISABILITY' in seminar hall on 16th January 2018 at 3.30pm by 2nd year medical and psychiatric social work scholars. This program went on as per the following agenda, first there was a small introduction on the topic the scholars presented physical ,psychological and social aspects of disability. Then we divided scholars into specializations and asked them to discuss the interventions that can be used with the person with disability in their fields, followed by two minutes presentation.

Workshops, Awareness Programme and Skit held : MPSW Forum
Oct 05, 2017:
1. Workshop on "Addressing Child Mental Health Issues” on 16th September, 2017 by Dr. Kavitha V. Jangam, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry Social Work NIMHANS Bengaluru. She dealt with causes and impact of psycho social problems of Child Mental Health. Some of the Intervention in Child Mental Health was also discussed by her. At the end Dr. Kavitha answered the questions posed by the students.
2. One day workshop on 17th September 2017 on "Responding to child sexual abuse : Role of Professional Social Workers” by Dr. Kavitha V. Jangam, Assistant professor of Psychiatric Social Work. She discussed Myths and impact on CSA on children. She also helped the participants to understand the POCSO ACT and its implications. The theoretical aspects were demonstrated with practical sessions. This workshop was attended by Practicing Counsellors. Student social workers from Roshni Nilaya and other colleges. Human Rights Education students and Law students. At the end she answered the questions posed by the students.
3. Medical and Psychiatric students commemorate World Alzheimer's Day, an awareness programme to UG students at School of Social Work, on 20th September 2017 at 9:30 a.m. After a brief introduction on World Alzheimer's Day, students of 2nd MPSW enacted a skit on Alzheimer's. Followed by power point presentation which explained the meaning of Alzheimer's Disorder, causes, warning signs, risk factors, prevention, treatment and care giving advice to family members. It ended with an Appeal to the students to recognise this disorder in the elderly n give them a helping hand.
4. Students of Roshni Nilaya performed a skit at the Inauguration of Suicide Lifeline at Forum Mall on the 1st October 2017 at 5 p.m.
Workshop on professional skills for Social Work Practice
SAHAYOG forum of BSW Department, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya On 23rd September 2017, organised a Workshop on Professional Skills for Social Work Practice for BSW students of various colleges under Mangalore University as well as for students of Shimoga and Goa. Besides, the local Social Work students, International social work students from Norway and Belgium doing Internship in India also attended the workshop.
During the workshop, Dr Rameela Shekhar, Dean of MSW Department delivered a presentation on Micro-skills of Case Work while Mrs.Luella Shanthi Lobo, Counsellor facilitated an interactive session on ‘Social Work Interventions in School Setting’ and Mr.Teddy Andrews of Manipal University handled the topic on ‘Use of Group Work in Fieldwork Practice’.
Scintilla 2017
The Psycho Education Programme, Scintilla-Spark up your Personality, was conducted by the M.Sc. department of Counselling for the students of other colleges on February 4 2017. This gave an opportunity for the participants to redefine their skills and attitudes above and beyond. It was an opening to rediscover and empower the positive in each one. Psycho-Educational sessions were effectively facilitated by the II M.SC students on different themes like- communication skill, Assertiveness training, Positive thinking, Presentation skill, Grooming, Coping skills and Team work. Scintilla also included a session on communication and self awareness through dance movements. It was very encouraging that 105 students from 10 different degree and paramedical (nursing) colleges participated and benefited from the sessions. The feedback was cheering and the need for such programmes in future was requested and highlighted.
Healing - Uncovering the Unconscious
On Friday, 12 January 2018, Department of Psychology, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya organized a workshop titled ‘Healing- Uncovering the Unconscious’ for the students. Assoc. Prof. Sandra S. Lobo, Head, Department of Psychology welcomed the gathering. Vice Principal Dr P. Jenis Mary expressed her happiness and appreciation towards the organizing of the workshop. Speaking about the prevailing psychological wounds that are difficult to understand, she emphasized that such a session would help to gain an introspective report of ourselves and pave the way to a better future.
The workshop was inaugurated by Mr Naveen Prasad, a healer, psychotherapist, Mandala artist, yoga and bio-energetics practitioner based in Coimbatore. In a unique manner, the workshop was inaugurated by the resource person removing the adhesive from the bandage and giving the model of a scarred heart, a wound care dressing. Through experiential exercises and activities, the participants of the workshop underwent the process of psychological differentiation and it empowered them to be aware of audio-visual and kinesthetic thoughts,behaviour, sensing, belief and emotional dimensions and how they interweave to build their identity. The three hour workshop was conducted with a purpose to help participants become integrated, happy, mature, responsible beings and also have clarity about the workings of human nature and the environment around them.

Through Gestalt, NLP, TA, Mandalas, Symbols, Meditative, Contemplative, Mindfulness, Movement and Art Therapy tools, Shri Naveen Prasad conducts a unique and a powerful self-development programme called ‘SWITCH’ every 2nd Saturday and Sunday of every month in Mangaluru.
Skill Development Workshop
A brief workshop was organized by the Department of Psychology for the third year students regarding career and skill development on March 10, 2018, 14 final year students participated in this workshop. The resource person for the workshop was Ms. Shwetha K.T, from Anirvedha-Resource Centre for Psychological wellbeing, Mangalore.
The session began with interactive activity where each student was asked to write two traits that qualified them to be a good psychologist and two traits that caused a hindrance. Once everybody had written for themselves, the students were asked to circulate their paper so that each of them could give their feedback pertaining to the individual. This activity proved to be very helpful as it paved a way for introspection and realization that favoured making desired changes.
After the successful completion of the activity, Ms Shwetha then familiarized us with varied career options that a student of psychology could pursue. She mentioned a few such career options as child psychology, adult psychology, organizational psychology and
their rising scope.
Ms. Shwetha emphasized the core qualities required by a person to be a good psychologist. First and foremost, she said it is necessary for a psychologist to be non-judgmental and unbiased as this would help the psychologist to comprehend any dilemmas faced by the patients/cases. The second most important factor was to be knowledgeable and excel in theory as it was essential to have a strong base. She encouraged students to read a lot of books in order to broaden their perspectives.
Apart from academics, one had to be aware about different cultural and social norms to facilitate communication as rapport is the key. Besides it would help to deliver culturally appropriate services and interventions. Ms. Shwetha spoke of the importance of being a good listener. She taught students a few etiquettes that were expected of a psychologist during an intervention such as maintaining a good posture, ensuring that a patient feels that one is paying attention by nodding appropriately, pacifying when required and other decorum.
The interaction ended with a short question answer session where all the questions and doubts pertaining to psychology based careers were answered. Overall it was an inspiring session that gave the participants a deeper insight to the field of psychology and motivated us to work harder towards our goals.
Workshop on Public Speaking and Presentation Skills
A one-day participative Workshop on Public Speaking and Presentation Skills was organised for First Year BSW students on 13 March 2018. The facilitator of the training was Prof. Krishnamurthy, a qualified Jaycee Trainer and Principal of SDM Pre-University Residential College, Ujire. The workshop consisted of practical sessions to enhance the communication and presentation skills of the students.
Movement Therapy Workshop
The Department of Psychology organized a Movement Therapy workshop for students and faculty of Psychology by an expressive arts therapist and dancer, Ms Karunya Srinivasan.
A total of 32 participants equally enrolled in two batches on August 8, 2018 which took place in the College.
The entire workshop was on expressive arts which was inter modal in nature. There was movement, elements of drama therapy and finally art therapy. There was a body experience even before the mind could process. The process was externalized moving from one medium of art to another. Using different art forms and movement helped to physicalize and concretize the abstract.
SCINTILLA 2018
Scintilla 2018, Activity based Psycho-educational programme was organised on February 10th, 2018. The session centred on the theme of building Psychological Capital. Scintilla 2018 was inaugurated by Dr.Malini Mukund. She stressed on the need for having a sense of humour, resilience as an important adaptive skills.
The sessions were facilitated by students of II M.Sc. Counselling. Various topics covered throughout the day was Self-awareness, Self-esteem willingness to change, optimism, cultivating Positive emotion and mindfulness.
80 participants from various colleges in Mangalore participated and benefitted from the session filled with expressive mode of learning, introspection, skill acquisition was a motivating experience.

Mental health and wellbeing
Dr Harish Shetty, renowned celebrity Psychiatrist addressed the students and general public on the topic Mental health and wellbeing on March 1st 2018.
He highlighted on the need to express emotion and need for wellbeing among people. 150 participants in and around Mangalore participated in the session.
Workshop on Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) 2018
A workshop on Participatory Rural Appraisal was organised by the SAHAYOG Forum for twenty nine final year BSW students at Seminar Hall, School of Social Work, and Roshni Nilaya on 3rd April 2018. The resource person for the workshop was Mr. B. Ramachandra Bhat, Retired Social work Trainer at MYRADA. During the workshop students understood the purpose and various methods of PRA that would help them to conduct PRA in their Field Work Communities. Students demonstrated various methods of PRA like Transact Walk, Resource Mapping, Venn Diagram, Social Mapping in the college campus. Group activities were also conducted to the students. There were also interactive sessions between students and faculty.

SESSION REPORT:
The department of M.Sc. Counselling had organised a full day Workshop on Expressive Art Therapy, for the M.Sc. Counselling students and other counsellors in and around Mangalore . The resource person started the session with the confidentiality oath and continued with telling about the art therapy and also asked to express their emotions through art.Participants were encouraged to be non-judgmental towards self and others during the process of Art. Exploring self through art was personal and therapeutic experience to many of the participants. Processing of individual art held the group together and being at the space of openness and reflection was a wonderful experience.
Participants very much enjoyed the session and it was a new learning experience.
“The future HR Talents learn to play with numbers!”
Mr. Jeevan Kumar, HR Head from 'Solara Active Pharma Sciences Ltd', Mangalore, addressed the students of II MSW – PM & IR on 11th August, 2018 on the topic, ‘Minimum Wages’ and ‘Wage Structure’. Mr Kumar interacted with the students, and helped them in understanding the concept of minimum wage, the body that constitutes the fixation of minimum wages, and the criteria on which the minimum wages are based on.
During this session, the students were provided with a practical understanding of preparing a wage structure through an exercise of calculating the various allowances and statutory deductions in a person’s wage. Mr. Kumar also provided an insight on the preparation of a fitment with the CTC provided. He concluded the session by mentioning about the legal implications of not following the payment of minimum wages to the workers.
The session was extremely informative to the students, and a practical exercise of calculating various elements of the basic salary, as well as the CTC structure, helped the students to have a clearer understanding on the theoretical knowledge gained.

The event was organised with the objective of encouraging people irrespective of age to play.
Play is generally seen as an unproductive component when it actually has lots of properties to heal tenement, guilt, pain, express, grow and rejuvenate of self.
The event was inaugurated by Ms. Colin Dsouza, President - The institute of Social Service, along with Ms. Juliet C J, Principal and Dr Janice MaryVice Principal.
I and II M. SC. Students displayed counters of food, Art and Play for the student of KindeR Garden to Post graduate include teaching and non teaching staff.
We could achieve the objective of the event when each one relived their childhood through Play and colours.
Workshop on "Mindfulness Skill in DBT" organised
A Workshop on "Mindfulness Skill in DBT" was organised by Department of M. SC counselling on 1/09/2018. The Resource Person for the day was Dr. V Premanand , Associate Professor in Psychology , St Agnes Centre for PG studies, Mangalore.
The session focused on understanding the Philosophy of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and learning the core mindfulness skills which is the foundation for other skills in DBT.
Life Skills Truly Empowers
The Sociology-Economics Forum organized a Life Skill Development workshop for the forum students (First, Second, Third Year) on 6th September 2018 in the Seminar Hall of Roshni Nilaya.
Associate Prof. Ms. Cecilia Farida Goveas welcomed the gathering and introduced the workshop and its objective. Principal, Prof. Juliet C.J. shared her thoughts about how important life skills are along with formal education. It is life skills that truly empowers an individual.
The workshop was inaugurated by untying the ribbon to a list of life skills put innovatively together.
The Resource person Mr. Preetham Rosrigues, Director Inchara Foundation and Founder of Project Angel started the session by conducting games, skill development activities. The main topic of the workshop was goal setting and self -esteem and confidence.
The one-day workshop is a part of a three-day workshop programme. December 2018 and January 2019 shall see two more days of the workshop with other life skills being covered.
At the end of the workshop, a completion certificate shall be given to each student who has attended all the three sessions.

Workshop on Street Theater
A two-day Street Play Training Programme was organized for Final Year BSW students on 27 & 28 September 2018. The trainer was Mr. Krishna Chakravarthi from Bangalore Media Centre, Bangalore. Students got training on different types of facial expressions and also learnt that with the help of innovative songs, actions and dialogues, the play emphasized the need to break the silence in society. Students were divided into groups and demonstrated theme-based street play during the workshop.
Educational Tour to Anugraha Counselling centre, Dindigul-Day 1
The training programme began at 3:00pm on 25/11/2018 in anugraha, Dindigal. Fr. Wilson introduced the topic healing the inner child. In the introductory session, Animal imprinting theory of konard Lorenz and it's three aspects of imprinting in babies, Bowlby's evolutionary theory of attachment and child development under which prenatal stage was explained.
The second session at 6: 00 pm began with a brief introduction to feminism and women psychology. Certain concepts related to women psychology were explained in detail. The concepts included hormonal imbalance in women, it's cause and effects. It was also explained as to how women surpass men in all the fields which included physical quotient, intelligence quotient, emotional quotient, spiritual quotient and managing quotient. Women's menstrual cycle and problems related to menstruation were elaborated on with it's cause and effect. Finally exercises to overcome these problems were demonstrated and practiced by the group.
Workshop on Crime Scene Investigation
A workshop on Crime Scene Investigation was organized on 6th December 2018 in the college auditorium for students of criminology and students of St Agnes College by B.C. Ravindra, Rtd. Crime Scene Expert and Forensic Ballistic Expert. He gave awareness about Crime Scene Management and explained about different techniques used in Crime Scene processing. Students got knowledge on reconstruction of crime scenes in cases of Arson, Ballistics, Asphyxial death, Homicide and Drowning. Practical demonstration of the hanging case was shown to students.

On the occasion of Crime Prevention Month 2018,Department of Criminology in Collaboration with Economic and Narcotic Crime Police Station,Cyber Crime Police Station, Mangalore South Police Station ,Commissionerate of Police,Mangaluru City had organised a session on “Youth Participation in Prevention of Crime” on 15th December 2018 at 10.30 a.m in the college Auditorium. The topics like rash driving, harassment in public transportation and substance abuse were enacted.
Sri. Bhaskar V B, Assistant Commissioner of Police ,Central Sub Division ,Mangaluru City inaugurared the program and gave an insight on menace of Crime prevalent in today's society and the role of police and public to curb them.
Mr. Ramakrishna K K, Inspector,Economics and Narcotics Crime Police Station, Pandeshwar,Mangalore and Mr. Mohammed Sharif,Inspector Urwa Police Station were present for the inaugural.
Dr.Caroline P. D’Souza MBBS, DPM, DNB (PSY), who is a consultant psychiatrist, was a resource person. She spoke about drug abuse in great detail, taking the audience along the stages that a victim of drug abuse goes through.
Another resource person, Sri. Savithru Tej P. D police inspector at the Cyber Crime Police Station, Mangaluru and he addressed the various kinds of cases including skimming, identity theft, crimes done through social media, Nigerian fraud, etc.

"Scintilla- 2019" A Psycho educational Programme based on Art, dance and drama Therapy was organized and facilitated by department of M. SC. Counselling on February 9th, 2019.
The objective of the session was to promote artistic self expression, self awareness, integration of physical and emotional well being, resolve intrapersonal Conflict and achieve insight.
The event was inaugurated by Ms. Ratna Pinto, a renowned soft skill trainer and an Alumni of Roshni.
The delegates from various colleges across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi participated in the experiential Process throughout the day witnessing and involving themselves in the world of music, movement, colours and Mask.
Natesh Ullal Trains UG Students on Documentary Film Making
Rangasagara - Theatre and Film Appreciation Society, Department of English, in collaboration with One People International Schools Film Network organised a Documentary Film Making Course from the 19th to the 23rd of January 2019.
The students of Roshni Nilaya were fortunate to be trained by Natesh Ullal who is a Mangalore based documentary film maker and film practitione. With 30 years of experience in film making, he specializes in video documentation, community television and facilitation of Video Production workshops.
The course was an attempt to bring together the creative resources and provide technical skills to students to promote self development and motivate them to use in purposeful ways towards the welfare of the society.
"Beti ko Bachao Cyber Crime Se": International Women's Day Celebrated
The School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru, celebrated the International Women's Day on 8th March 2019.
The day had a meaningful session by Mr. Ananth Prabhu G, Cyber Crime Trainer, Karnataka Police Academy, on awareness about the different types of cyber crime committed against women.
Copies of the book titled Beti ko Bachao Cyber Crime Se, co-authored by Mr. Ananth Prabhu G and Vivek Shetty and Mr. Azfar Razack were distributed among students and staff.
A short recreation programme was also organized by the male students of the college.
Skill Development Programme and Certificate Distribution by Socio-Economic Forum
To truly empower the students with life skills and prepare them for career goals the Socio-Economic Forum in association with Inchara Foundation conducted a One -Day Skill Development Programme on 28.03.2019.
The programme was attended by 26 students of the Sociology-Economics department. The Resource person for the programme was Mr. Preetham Rodrigues, Director Inchara Foundation and Founder of Project Angel. He started the session by conducting games, skill development activities. The main objective of the workshop was to develop body language, self-confidence, grooming, and non-verbal communication among the students.
Mock interviews were also conducted for the students. At the end of the workshop, a completion certificate was given to each student who had attended both the sessions of the programme. The faculty of the department of Economics Associate Professor, Cecilia F. Goveas and Faculty of the Department of Sociology Ms. Joan O’Brien were also present during the programme.

A Session on “Cyber Security and Ethical Hacking“ was conducted by PG Department of Criminology and Forensic Science in Collaboration with Twaritha Solutions LLP , Bengaluru on 13 March 2019 ,under the guidance of Ms.Saritha D’Souza ,Head Of The Department along with the faculties.
The chief guest for the session was Mr.Srinidhi S (Certified Cyber Fraud Expert ,Bengaluru) , who was accompanied by Mr.Sandeep (Certified Cyber Fraud Expert ,Bengaluru), Mr.Ravindra (Co-ordinator,Twaritha Solutions) and Mr. Chandan Patil ,SP of District Prison Mangalore.The resource person for the session Mr.Srinidhi spoke about the importance of cyber security and ethical hacking and made the students aware of various methods of hacking and how ethical hacking would benefit the society.The session has proven to be eye opening and very informative.
Cosmic Connections
The Department of Psychology organised a half-day Mandala Workshop for eleven students on Saturday, July 20th 2019. The workshop was conducted by Psychotherapist and trained Mandala artiste, Director of Ritham, Bendore, Mangaluru, Ms. Vimarsha Jain. The duration of the workshop was from 1:30-6pm in the Psychology laboratory.
All is well without stress
A half day workshop was organised by the Department of Psychology for the second year students and other interested students from I and III B.A (54). The workshop was conducted by Mr. Mahesh B.S., Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor of Kasturba Medical College and hospital, Mangaluru on Saturday, July 27th 2019 in the Psychology Laboratory.
The session began with a power point presentation about stress and its impact on one’s mind and body. An activity was conducted to identify stress under four categories namely Physical, Emotional, Cognitive and Behavioural. The controlled breathing technique and the 5 finger technique were demonstrated and the participants practiced it. A time management matrix sheet was answered by all.
Mr Mahesh B.S spoke on understanding and solving worry, as well as classifying them into 2 types - a) hypothetical worries and b) practical worries. A “stress emergency kit” was presented and participants picked items of their choice. After the question and answer session, Mr. Mahesh B.S displayed an art form of magic and mentalism which awed the participants.

In fond memory of Late. Dr. B. Ashoka, Former Head of the Department of Criminology and Forensic Science (1979-2016), The Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru in collaboration with Trinity Forensic Investigation & Analysis, Mangaluru, has organized a workshop on ‘TECHNIQUES IN CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION’ on 29th July 2019 at Maria Paiva Hall of the College.
Dr. Mahabalesh Shetty, Professor and Head of Department of Forensic Medicine, KSHEMA, Deralakatte Mangaluru was the resource person. Keen observation of scientific evidence found in the crime scene would reveal several clues to identify the culprit and to reconstruct the crime scene effectively he said. He also stated that this would be possible only if the crime scene is protected by barricading to be examined by the forensic experts.
The Chief Guest Shri. Kodandaram, Assistant Commissioner of Police, South Division, Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate addressed the gathering on the importance of Crime Scene Investigation and the role of forensic expert in criminal investigation. Dr. Olinda Pereira, Director of the Vishwas Trust and founder Principal of the college was the guest of honour. She shared the experience had working with Dr. B. Ashoka, simple person with great knowledge and had good relationship with police fraternity.
Dr. Uday Kumar K. Professor of Forensic Medicine and Medical Superintendent, Fr. Muller's Medical College, Mangaluru stressed on the need of team work between the doctors of Forensic Medicine, Criminology and Forensic Science experts to investigate a crime scene more effectively. Ms. Juliet C.J. Principal of the college expressed that the criminology department grew well under the guidance of Dr. Ashoka who was also had close contact with police and used to organize several collaborative programmes to educate the public. Mrs. Usha Askoka, Dr. Jenis Mary, Vice-Principal, Prof. Vineetha Rai, controller of examiner, faculty and students of the college, Alumni, staff and students of BSc Forensic Science and Criminology of Srinivas college were present on this occasion.
Dr. Saritha D’souza, Head of the department of Criminology and Forensic Science gave the introductory note on the purpose of organizing this workshop. Mr. Devaseelan S. Managing Director of the Trinity Forensic Investigation and Analysis, Mangaluru, had given a brief note on the service provided by his detective agency. Mr. Balajinarayan, Asst. professor presented a brief report about the college and the extension activities of the department.
Thereafter, there was signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the College and Trinity Forensic Investigation and Analysis. Mr. Amitesh Shetty, Asst. Professor of the department welcomed the gathering, II MSc students Mr. Vajagathali delivered the vote of thanks and Mr. Suhas Ragavendra was the master of ceremony. A total of 200 guests graced the occasion and helped make it a success.

The Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru in collaboration with Women Police, Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate, had organized ‘Awareness on Child Abuse” as a part of Extension service entitled ‘A Project on Crime Free Mangaluru’, held on 3rd August 2019 from 10am to 12.30pm at Dakshina Kannada Jilla Panchayath Hiriya Prathamika Shale, Pandeshwar, Mangaluru.
Chief Guest of the programme Smt. Srikala K.P. Police Sub-Inspector, Women Police Station, Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate addressed stating that Children must be double careful while walking on the road if a stranger approaches or gives some things to eat should not accept instead report to ‘Rani Abbakka Force’ which is launched in the city for the protection of women and children. Abusers will be in many form among known and unknown people, if they call to any strange place must not go she said. She stressed that Police are friends of children; hence children should not get scared or hesitate to approach police at any time in case of any help.
Poornima, Asst. Sub Inspector of Police, who had several years of experience working with women and children expressed that children should to be careful of different tricks played by the perpetrator, in case of any problems must not keep it with themselves instead express it to the people close to them in spite of a threat from the perpetrator.
Shalini H. K Headmistress, D.K Z. P Hiriya Prathamika Shale, Pandeshwar, Mangaluru appreciated the initiative taken by the faculty and students of Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, school of Social work, Mangaluru in educating the children with regard to child abuse. We have been giving them the awareness with regard to the issues related to children but if the other institutions and the police themselves convey it to the children it would be effective, she said.
Dr. Saritha D’Souza, Head of the Department of Criminology and Forensic Science spoke to the children stressing on the aspects of good touch and the bad touch. The perpetrators target the children as they are more vulnerable to be abused. Hence, children should learn to express their problems with their parents, teachers or with the people with whom they are more close, she said.
Amitesh Shetty, Asst. Professor & faculty coordinator of the programme gave the introductory note on the purpose of organizing this programme by the department which is aiming to cover all the other institutions in the city as well under the banner ‘A project on Crime Free Mangaluru’, not only on the child abuse but also other crimes such as drug abuse, cyber-crimes and so on.
Jayanthi, Women Police Constable, Mahadevi, Representative of Rani Abbakka Force, Balajinarayan, Asst. Professor of the department, teachers of the school and around 50 children were present on this occasion.
The programme began with a group discussion on the issues related to children, awareness was conveyed to the children by a mime and a group dance performed by the students of MSc Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Mangaluru. "People Management - Issues and Concerns"- A One Day National Conference
Roshni Alumni Association (regd.) in Association with NIPM Mangalore chapter and HRM Forum – School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, jointly organised a One-day National Conference on “People Management: Issues and Concerns”. The Conference was held at the Maria Paiva Hall in the campus of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya on 14th of August 2019.
More than 150 delegates attended the Conference from more than ten Institutes of Social Work in Mangalore, and other Management Education Institutions across the City and State.
Delegates included Faculty teaching HR students, field practitioners and many others from various disciplines related to HR like Law, Criminology, Corporate / Organizational Psychology.
The Conference was organised by four eminent Alumni of the Roshni Alumni Association –Sri S.N. Gopinath, Ex- Chairman, NIPM Karnataka Chapter, Bengaluru ,Sri Bhima Rao, HR Advisor, Bengaluru, Sri. While the Conference is a part of the homecoming celebrations of the Roshni Alumni Association for its members, it also aims to plough back the experiential knowledge base of its Alumni into its Alma Mater for the wider benefit of its students and society.
On the occasion, a digital directory of all 7000 students that have passed out from the Roshni campus – Under-graduate and Post-Graduate Degree and Diploma was published. The Digital Directory is the outcome of months of effort by the members of the Association.
The Digital Directory is expected to inform, connect and encourage Alumni to return to their Alma Mater frequently for the benefit of faculty and students who can learn a lot from their library of experiences.

Workshop on Group Dynamics and Social Skill Development for II BSW students organised by the Department of English. It culminated in a group presentation and Poster Making on Global Warming.
When Learning becomes Fun – Study Tour , Department of M.Sc. Counselling
35 students and 2 faculties from M.Sc. Counselling Department went on a study tour from 29th November to 3rd December 2019 at Don Bosco Institute of Counselling and Spirituality. The Focus area of the study tour was Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).
On the first day of the study tour on 29th December 2019, Fr. K.C. Thomas, Director of the Institute introduced the topic ‘Emotional Freedom Technique’ followed by history, techniques and its application. Practical exposure to the technique was beneficial to the budding Counselling Psychologists. The day ended with a short clipping called ‘David's water phobia’.
The next three days of the study tour was focused on NLP, facilitated by Fr. Kuriakose. Facilitator introduced NLP with brief history and the process of development. The students were told how powerful NLP is, by which they were made aware of how people understand the environment through their dominant modalities.
The Communication model was elaborated. Through different modes of exercises students were made to understand functions of the right and left brain and the learning styles andthe identification of their dominant preference.
Further the group was given information about cueing of the eyes and the role of the same in communication as well the importance of it in counselling. Students were given practical session to understand and learn.
The communication model was discussed. Distortion, beliefs, values, language, generalisation filters was elaborated upon. Students were also given detailed information about blame- frame and outcome frame questions. ‘Dancing on the Timeline’ technique was then taught. All the techniques were practiced in groups which helped the students get clarity and confidence to practice what they learnt. The 4 days at Don Bosco Ended with games, fun –filled activities and dance sessions.
On 3rd December, the M.Sc. Counselling troop set out to enjoy and relish the beauty of Trivandrum city. It was a hazy morning and the journey began by visiting the “Madre de deus” church in vettukadu which has sea in front and it was a feast to the eyes indeed to see the beautiful carving on the walls of the church. The group then headed towards Kannakakunnu Palace followed by Napier Museum, Sree Chitra Art Gallery, Aquarium, Zoo and Reptiles. The Kovallam beach visit was a mesmerising experience. Students made memories, friends and took home a plethora of their learning , experience and education.
‘CRIFO 2k19’ Workshop on the Bridge of Investigating Cyber-Crime’
The Post Graduate Department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru had organised a State Level Workshop on ‘COMPUTER AND MOBILE FORENSICS’ on 4th October 2019 at Maria Paiva Hall at School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya. This day is also marked as the genesis of “CRIFO”, the first annual convention of the Department by watering the sampling (Ashoka plant) in fond remembrance of Late. Dr. B. Ashoka, former Head & founder of the Department.
The Guest of Honour Sri. B M Laxmi Prasad, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada District inaugurated the workshop by lighting the lamp and addressed the gathering. He stressed on the importance of Locard’s principle of exchange during investigation and our dependency on modern technology. Criminal Justice System relies on scientific evidence found in the crime scene which is not an easy task in cybercrime he said. Working of software, imaging, knowing the basic difficulties in the Digital world we need to be more careful and safeguarding ourselves, he added.
The Special Guest Mr. Suresh Kumar B. Director, Texial Cyber Security and Founder of Incognito Forensics stated that in the digital era, Texial Cyber Security works on ethical hacking and various issues related to cybercrimes. It also helps the law enforcement agencies in cyber related cases by providing necessary facts.
Ms Juliet C J, the Principal of the College acknowledged the constant support received from the police department in providing practical exposure on functions of police for the students and giving an opportunity to be a part of crime prevention month and traffic safety week. Digital Forensic being the upcoming skill based field, she motivated the participants to ‘Be the change makers and experts in the field’.
Dr. Saritha D’Souza, Head of the department of Criminology and Forensic Science delivered the key note address stating the purpose of organising the workshop. She stated that the purpose of the workshop was to bring together all the academicians of various disciplines to work for a common cause i.e. to prevent cybercrimes by adopting appropriate methods.
Mr. Don Caeiro, Cyber Forensic Expert and Asstistant Professor of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanthi College, Bengaluru and Mr Fardeen Ahmed, Cyber Security Analyst, Texial Cyber Security, Bengaluru were the Resource Persons for the workshop who provided both technical sessions and hands-on-training for the delegates on the theme.
Mr. Don Caeiro presented a session on the Basics of Computer Forensics followed by a session on Recent Advancements in the field of Cyber Forensics by Mr Fardeen Ahmed. The third session was presented by both the Resource Persons on the topic Challenges Faced by Investigators. This was followed by a Hands-on-Training Session after lunch on Steganography, Meta Data Analysis, Password Cracking and Detection of E-mail Spoofing.
Dr. Jenis Mary, Vice Principal, Prof. Vinitha Rai, Registrar of Evaluation and Dr. Jacinta D’Souza, former Principal of the College, Forensic Doctors, Faculties and students of other colleges in and around Karnataka, were present on this occasion. Altogether around 150 delegates have participated in this state level workshop.

SCINTILLA 2020 -National Level Psychoeducational Workshop
On 8th February, a huge number of delegates from colleges all over India, gathered at School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya in Mangalore for a Psychoeducational Session entitled SCINTILLA 2020. The event marked the fifth year of Scintilla in succession.
Youth of the present generation have got all savvy about modern technology, leaving behind the conventional ways, thus making them lazy and inactive. If they need any information, there is the internet. They need a friend, there is the use of internet to make friends, on social media. They need entertainment, there it is again with the use of internet to watch videos and play game. Everything, all there, ready at the tip of the fingers, sitting on the chair, with no physical activity involved, nor much use of intellect.
Scintilla 2020, completely refuted the above. It brought to today’s youth a chance to actively use their intellectual capabilities, strategic mind, physical ability, thus motivating them to move away from electronic devices and engage themselves in active play for Emotional, Social and Cognitive development.
The event began with the choir leading us through prayers with the prayer song ‘As the Deer’.
The dignitaries and the delegates were welcomed by Ms. Jennifer Carlo – Assistant Professor, Department of MSc Counselling and the Keynote Address for Scintilla 2020 was delivered by Ms. Rosa Nimmy Matthew, Head of the Department, MSc Counselling who educated the audience on Psychoeducation and its benefits.
She said that, play is an important source of development, not just as recreation, but as a medium through which one can enhance their skills and thought processes and the delegates of today’s program were ecstatic to have got this opportunity to be a part of a program of this sort.
It was followed by Presidential Address, conveyed by The Principal of Roshni Nilaya, Dr. Juliet CJ. who proved that active play lights a spark in any individual. She put forward a question to the participants, if they would like to play an active game and all the faces lit with an affirmative response. She further, encouraged the host of the event, the 1st and 2nd year students of MSc. Counselling, by imploring them to take the event to the next level, i.e. from National Level to an International Level as they have the competence to achieve it.
Ms. Emlia Diniz Silveira student of First year MSc. Counselling, introduced the Chief Guest - Dr. T. S Thomas, former Senior Programme officer, Colombo Plan, and called on him to address the gathering.
The Chief Guest, Dr. T. S Thomas, addressed the gathering and declared SCINTILLA 2020, open. In his address, Dr. T. S Thomas mentioned that everyone has a need for psychoeducation, as prevention is better than cure. He said, when we psych educate ourselves, we become aware of what we are, what we have and what is important to us.
He alerted us on not waiting till the moment of illness, to psycho educate ourselves. The Chief Guest also encouraged the participants to not only learn but also experience the process. Since, it is very much a need of the hour. He also highlighted and gave a few statistics on what is currently happening around us, like, internet addiction, social media, drug abuse, poverty, depression, suicide rate, etc. He was very pleased with the concept of SCINTILLA 2020, - PSYCHOEDUCATION WORKSHOP. As he concluded his talk, he left us with a quote, to ponder over,
“It’s impossible” said Pride,
“It’s risky” said experience,
“It’s pointless” said reason.
“Give it a try”, whispered the heart.
The formal function ended with Dr. Wilsy Francis, Asst. Professor MSc Counselling Department, giving the vote of thanks.
SCINTILLA 2020, the delegates were divided into six groups, focussing on the following three themes;
To Foster Acceptance, Build Competence and Enhance Skills through play, using exercises like props, fantasy, movement, art and craft, rounds, dyads, music, dance, singing which in turn helps in development of Emotional, Social and Cognitive Skills, enhancing the following areas under this three major developmental dimensions: 1. Emotional – Identifying and recognizing emotions, Regulating Emotions and Appropriate Expression of Emotions. 2. Social – Verbal and nonverbal communication, social perception and empathy. 3. Cognitive – To enhance memory through visualisation, creativity, idea generation, critical and discovery learning.
Learning to Make an Impression - Workshop on Public Speaking
Students were enlightened with a one day workshop on Effective Public speaking on the 18th of February 2020 at the Seminar Hall. The Resource Person Professor Krishnamurthy, the Principal of Pre- University SDM Residential College, Ujjire, focussed on topics such as importance of Public Speaking, Stage fear and how to overcome it, Speech Preparation, Stage performance, Pick and Speak, Turncoat, Mock Press and so on. All the topics are done through activity and presentation by the students.
Workshop on Public Speaking and Presentation Skills
A one-day participative Workshop on Public Speaking and Presentation Skills was organised for First Year BSW students on 13 March 2018. The facilitator of the training was Prof. Krishnamurthy, a qualified Jaycee Trainer and Principal of SDM Pre-University Residential College, Ujire. The workshop consisted of practical sessions to enhance the communication and presentation skills of the students.
Report on the virtual workshop on ‘Recognizing and dealing with Anxiety’
Department of M.Sc Counselling, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya Mangalore, hosted a National level virtual workshop on ‘Recognizing and dealing with Anxiety’ on 11th July, 2020.
There were 56 participants from various states of India and a few from abroad. The workshop was facilitated by Counseling Psychologist Ms. Deepthi Kodath, alumna of the Institute. The objective of the workshop was to impart knowledge and skills to identify the symptoms of anxiety and to deal with it effectively.
The two hour interactive session was based on CBT approach where in the facilitator explained how to identify the cognitive and behavioral components that contribute anxiety as well as provided tips on dealing with it as on navigates through difficult and stressful situations.
The entire session was well appreciated by the participants and many expressed it as an amazing learning experience which they would look forward to participate in future.

Department of M.Sc. Counselling, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya Mangalore, hosted International Virtual Workshop on Couple Therapy from 21st to 25th September, 2020. 32 participants from various states of India took part in this workshop.
The five course modules of two hours each were designed to prepare clinical professionals and post graduate students to work with couples in their clinical practices. The modules comprised of Theory and practice of couple therapy, understanding mate selection process, human attachment and adult relationships, contemporary clinical challenges in couple therapy (partner aggression, affairs/infidelity, substance use disorders, sexual problems), structural couple therapy, Bowen Family Systems couple coaching, Gottman couple therapy, Emotionally Focussed therapy, Affective-Reconstructive couple therapy and Functional Analytic couple therapy. The modes of instruction of each day were research-based presentations and clinical case discussions.
The Facilitator of the Workshop was Dr. Sebastian Perumbilly, Ph.D., LMFT tenured Associate Professor in the Marriage and Family Therapy programme at Southern Connecticut State University, USA, and the recipient of the Fulbright Academic and Professional Excellence Award.
As a systemically focused psychotherapist, Dr. Sebastin is a licensed marriage and family therapist, a clinical fellow, and an approved clinical supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). The workshop was greatly appreciated by the participants and many expressed it as a remarkable learning experience which they would look forward to have one of an advanced level in the future.
Skill Development Workshop Series
IQAC in collaboration with Lions Club International and Manashanthi, Mangalore organised a Skill Development Workshop – A Series of training the Trainers on December 2nd, 9th and 18th 2020. The Objective of this workshop series was to create Youth Champions for community development.
Dr. Rameela Shekhar, Mental Health Professional Manashanthi and Dr. Avinash Shekhar, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist, Manashanthi were the resource persons for this series of training programmes.
The theme for the first day of workshop was “Psychological Well –being and Self Care”, which was held on 2nd December 2020 . Principal of the College Dr. Juliet C.J and Er. Vijaya Vishnu Mayya, Dist. Coordinator, Youth Camp and Exchange were the Presiding officers for this session. Lion Ronald Gomes, Immd. Previous District Governor Lions District 317-D. Dr.Geethaprakash Angarkody , Dist. Governor, Lions District 317-D were the Chief guests . IQAC Coordinator, Associate Professor Cecilia F. Goveas proposed the Vote of Thanks.

" Love Life, Love You ! "- International Webinar on Suicdality
Report on the International Webinar on ‘Phenomenon on Suicide and Suicidality: Assessment and Clinical Strategies.'
Taking into account the facts that suicide is now among the three leading causes of death among those between the age group of 15 and 45 years old (WHO, 2019) and that psychiatric issues and lack of supportive communities are often identified as underlying factors associated with a high suicide rate among college/university students (Karbayez, et al, 2016), the Department of M.Sc Counselling, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya Mangalore, hosted International Webinar on Phenomenon on Suicide and Suicidality: Assessment and Clinical Strategies on 11th December, 2020.
The two hour session was designed with the objective to develop a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of ‘Suicide’ and ‘Suicidality’ with its connection to risks and protective factors within the context of mental health and primary prevention and furthermore to raise awareness with a view to work towards removing socio-cultural backgrounds that may prevent students from seeking support and help.
There were 36 participants (PG students, clinicians and mental health practitioners) from various states of India. The modes of instruction were research-based presentations and clinical case discussions. Workshop on ‘Person Centered Therapy’
A Workshop on ‘Person Centered Therapy’ was organised by the department of M.Sc. Counselling for the I M.Sc. Counselling students on 22nd March 2021. The resource person for the workshop was Mrs Lugina Miranda. The workshop started with a Prayer song, sung by Anjana J, followed by the welcome speech by Vishanth Menezes.
The session began at 09:00 a.m. with a short introduction of the participants as asked by the resource person.
The resource person, Mrs Lugina Miranda introduced the topic PCT with the basic overview of psychotherapy, person centred therapy and life of Carl Rogers. She explained in detail the non-directive style of Counselling which is the core of this therapy. The resource person further explained the humanistic approach and the fact that people are capable of self-directed growth. Therefore, the Self-actualization concept was explained in detail.
The 3 core conditions of Roger's for Counselling that is unconditional positive regard, empathy and genuineness were discussed with examples. Further the principles of PCT like, self-actualization, experiential theory, were explained. The resource person also emphasized the importance of body language. Later she expounded on the specific goals of PCT like helping the client to self-actualize, non-advising, focusing on continuous growth and self-exploration.
Mrs. Lugina explained in detail the significance of therapeutic techniques, setting boundaries, counselling setting and sitting position. She emphasized on the importance and causes of the feelings, Further she gave the students an overview of the basic listening sequence. The importance of tone of the voice and the body language were explained to the students with examples.
The resource person then elaborated on the concept of self-importance, self-care and self-acceptance. Lastly, following tasks were given to the students to practice,
The workshop came to an end at 01:00 pm with a photo session, feedback and the vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Rajani B.
Workshop on ‘Case History and MSE’
Workshop on ‘Case History and MSE’ was organized by the department of M.Sc. Counselling, for the I M.Sc. Counselling students on 23rd March 2021. The resource person for the workshop was Ms. Shruti Rajan. The workshop began at 9:00am with the resource person introducing herself and asking the students to introduce their background.
The session began by explaining Case History, the definition of case History, why is it needed, why is it done and how it is done.
She then explained the main Elements of Case History such as the socio demographics, presenting complaints, history of presenting illness, History of past illness, personal and family history, premorbid personality, Mental Status Exam, diagnostic Formulation.
The Resource person then explained the 5 P’s which are problem, predisposing, protective, precipitating and perpetuating. Each P was explained well by the Resource person.
She then went on to discuss the elements of case history in detail. She also gave an insight that everything what the psychologist writes should be in exact verbatim of what the client says, especially the history of past and present illness. It helps to understand all psychological problems better.
In the second part of the session, she gave an exercise where the participants had to identify the disorder by reading the statements of the clients.
Ms. Shruti Rajan then explained about negative history and the points to be ruled out. She also explained about the genogram and how to draw it. She gave an insight into how to collect all history about each area in such a way that it made students easier to understand.
She rendered clear knowledge about the Mental Status Examination (MSE). The main elements that need to be focused were also mentioned such as general appearance and behavior, cognitive functions, thought functions, perception, mood and affect and also other psychotic and non-psychotic phenomena and insight. She also helped the participants gain insight about the MMSE (Mini Mental Status Exam), its advantages, disadvantages and also how to interpret it.
In the final part of the session, she spoke about the different assessments used such as checklists, questionnaires and different types of tests. She also explained about diagnostic formulation, which is the brief summary of positive relevant details that end in diagnosis.
Ms. Shruti Rajan ended the session by sharing her experience with a client and concluded that how tests can be appropriate or inappropriate. The session ended at 1:00PM after clarifying the doubts raised by the participants.
Workshop on “FUNCTIONAL BEHAVIOURAL ANALYSIS”
Workshop on “FUNCTIONAL BEHAVIOURAL ANALYSIS” was organized by the department of M.Sc. Counselling for the I M.Sc. Counselling students on 25th and 26thMarch 2021. The resource person for the workshop was Ms. Christy Francis. The workshop commenced with a prayer by Sr. Liji, followed by the welcome speech by Ms. Hensita D’costa. After this, students were asked to introduce themselves to the trainer.
Ms. Christy Francis began her session with a brief introduction regarding ‘Functional behavioural analysis’. She explained how functional behavioural analysis grew from functionalism and behaviouristic school. Trainer also gave a brief overview on the principles of operant and classical conditioning. She gave us a clear definition of ‘behaviour’ and also provided us knowledge on how we can identify behaviour along with characteristics of the behaviour.
Resource person explained about the difference between functional behavioural assessments and behavioural analysis. The trainer further offered knowledge on the meaning, goals, characteristics, and the uses of functional behavioural assessments. After this she enriched the participants with the information on behavioural analysis i.e. science of controlling and predicting human behaviour. Further she gave them a considerable amount of information on the analysis of the behaviour through A-B-C Method, where ‘A’ stands for the antecedent event, ‘B’ is the behaviour and the ‘C’ stands for the consequences of the behaviour.
After explaining the theoretical part, trainer divided the participants into groups of three and asked them to do the behavioural analysis through role play or a simulated counselling session. As the first step of behavioural analysis, participants collected the case history of the client i.e. Socio- demographic details, presenting complaints of the client and the history of the presenting illness [HOPI]. After collecting the case history, participants were explained about the different types of questions that should be asked under antecedent event, behaviour of the client and consequences of the behaviour for the purpose of behavioural analysis. Through this role play participants got a clear idea about the ways for conducting behavioural analysis.
The trainer winded up the session by explaining the participants the causes and management of the problematic behaviour. The participants got knowledge about the steps that a therapist needs to take to tackle the problematic behaviour of a client. The training session on the first day got over by clarifying the doubts about the concept.
Training session on day 2 began with understanding the ABC of challenging behaviour. The resource person explained to the participants various concepts under it, which were Motivating Operations, Antecedent or trigger, Challenging Behaviour, Consequence, Identifying function(s), and the types of interventions namely Antecedent Strategies, Replacement Skills and Consequence strategy.
Participants were then introduced to the Kanfer and Saslow Model and the questions that need to be addressed within the model. The trainer acquainted the participants to the SORKC Model for analysis of behaviour. She also made them understand the 7 stages of understanding behaviour which were Initial analysis of Problem, Clarification of Problem Situation, Motivation Analysis, Developmental Analysis, Analysis of Self-Control, Analysis of Social Relationships, Analysis of Social, Cultural and Physical factors. Participants then had discussion on the cautions to be aware of while using the model.
The resource person then divided the participants into groups of three to understand this model through a simulated therapy session. Participants were first told to establish rapport with the client as it is an important part of any counselling session. Through this session participants understood clearly how to use the SORKC Model to analyse challenging behaviour and understand it through the 7 stages mentioned above.
The resource person then asked for queries and clarifications with the participants with which she concluded day 2 of the session. It was a very enriching experience for the student participants, where they understood the fundamentals of Functional Behavioural Assessment and Analysis i.e. the ABC Model and Kanfer and Saslow Model.
Virtual workshop on Marriage and Family Dynamics
Department of MSc Counselling, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya Mangalore, organized a two days virtual workshop on ‘Marriage and Family Dynamics’ on 10th and 12th April, 2021. The participants were 22 students of the M.sc counseling department. It was a 5 hours workshop designed to prepare the post graduate students to work with couples in their clinical practices. The modules comprised of family life cycle stages which is primary content of Human development, patterns of communication, decision making, and various common issues of married couples, and families. The modes of instruction of each day were research-based presentations with videos and clinical case discussions. The facilitator of the workshop was Dr. Prince CJ, consultant of the Prajodana counselling centre, New Delhi. The workshop was greatly appreciated by the participants and many expressed that it was very interesting, interactive and a remarkable learning experience.
Virtual workshop on Sexual Counselling
The post graduate department of counseling, School of Roshni Nilaya, Mangluru organized a national level virtual workshop on Sexual Counselling on 27th April 2021. There were 65 participants from various states of India. The aim of the workshop was to enlighten and educate the participants on the various aspects and components involved in sexual counseling. The matter that is dealt as taboo in the Indian society was very beautifully and skillfully explained by the resource person. The module of 2 hours consisted of common sexual dysfunctions and treatment models. The modes of instruction were research-based presentations and clinical case discussions. The facilitator of the workshop was Mr. Gautham Krishnan, assistant professor & consultant clinical psychologist, from KMC Mangalore. Throughout the session he kept an open and a comfortable environment and made it a very interactive one. The workshop was greatly appreciated by the participants and expressed their gratitude towards the faculty and the resource person for such a remarkable experience.
Webinar on Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA)
The BSW Department, School of Social Work, RoshniNilaya, Mangaluru, organized a Webinar on“ PARTICIPATORY RURAL APPRAISAL” on 4th June 2021. The Webinar was held on Google meet from 2.30pm to 4.00pm. The resource person for this Webinar was Fr. Vinod Mascarenhas, Director, Capuchin Krishik Seva Kendra, (R) Belthangady.
The Webinar began with a welcome address by Prof. Vineetha Rai, Head of the BSW Department and Registrar (Evaluation) School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya. She welcomed the Resource person and introduced the resource person to the participants.
Fr. Vinod spoke about PRA- History, Objectives, Key Principles, Tool, Techniques and Advantages of PRA.
The session ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Anima Ming of III BSW. Prof. Vineetha Rai concluded the Webinar by thanking the resource person Fr. Vinod Mascarenhas, the organizing team and also the faculty of BSW Department.
