On 15th August 2024, the students of the Forum for Sustainable Development from the Post Graduate Department of Social Work in collaboration with Nadiparisara Samrakshana Nagarika Okkuta, Nethravathi Meenugarara Sangha, Kings Star Seva Samiti, and Nada Dhoni Meenugarara Sangha organised 77th Independence Day celebration at Ullal Hoige, near the Nethravathi River. The programme began with the hoisting of the National Flag, marking the patriotic fervor of the day. Prem Prakash, President of Kings Star Seva Samiti, welcomed the attendees and set the tone for the event.

The highlight of the celebration was a special tribute to the fishermen who have dedicated their lives to the Nethravathi River, facing significant challenges in their field. Fifteen fishermen were honored for their contributions and resilience, recognizing their role in sustaining the river’s ecosystem and their communities. Following the felicitation, an interactive session was held between the honored fishermen and the social work trainees. During the interaction, the fishermen shared their personal experiences, detailing their work processes and the struggles they have faced in their journey. This insightful exchange provided the students with valuable perspectives on the hardships faced by the community.

The event witnessed participation from local area counselors, youth club members, the fisherman community, and social work students from Roshni Nilaya and St. Aloysius College. The programme was skillfully hosted by Riyaz, a member of Kings Star Seva Samiti. The Independence Day celebration not only fostered a sense of patriotism but also emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting the local communities that are integral to the environment and economy.
