On 20th September 2024, eight students of the Forum for Sustainable Development from the Post Graduate Department of Social Work actively participated in a Beach Cleaning Programme at the Ullal Community. The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness and contribute to the cleanliness of the beach and its surroundings. The students assembled at 8:00 AM near the beach, where they had a briefing session with Ms. Anitha, Coordinator of the Plastic for Change Organization. She provided valuable insights into the objectives of the programme and ensured the safety of participants by distributing masks and gloves to all trainees.
In groups, the students diligently cleaned the beach and its surrounding areas, removing plastic waste and litter to restore the natural beauty of the coastline. The programme also provided an opportunity for the students to interact with the members of the Corporation Municipal Council (CMC), who were present at the event. During these discussions, the students emphasized the need to:
- Install dustbins for shopkeepers to manage waste effectively.
- Enforce strict waste management practices to maintain the cleanliness of the beach.
The beach cleaning programme was a step towards environmental conservation and fostered collaboration between students, local authorities, and the community. The event not only raised awareness about waste management but also demonstrated the importance of collective action in protecting the environment. This initiative reflects the commitment of the Forum for Sustainable Development and the students of the Social Work Department toward creating a sustainable and cleaner future.
